The Charlotte NC -  Mecklenburg County Tax Collector is really working hard to get more revenue.  So if you just purchased a home in Mecklenburg County beware of tax revaluations!  Yes...Beware!

We all know that tax revaluations can raise or lower your taxes on your home.  Most likely, raise the tax burden.

So here is the way the revaluations can hit your pocket book more than you expect!

Let's say you purchased a home in June of 2010.  Everything done correctly.  February 2011 the revaluations are done.  April 2011 you get a certified letter stating that the square footage of your 22 year old  home is incorrectly recorded due to an error on the part of the real estate tax department.

They are so thoughtful that they correct the error and you guessed it...you owe more taxes on your house because it is bigger than the county had on record...BUT the kicker is that they county has the legal right to CHARGE YOU, the new homeowner 5 years of back taxes for the mistake they made.  Yes this is true.

So, they say you owe $480 for 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006.  Yes....$2400.00 and there is NOTHING you can do about it.  Infact, the records are gone showing what was originally recorded and what they have now...so no explanation, no proof, ONLY a bill that if you do not pay they can go after YOU FOR. And you did not even own the home until 6/2010.

Well, they needed to find a way to increase revenue without raising the base and with home values going down...here is their opportunity to stick it to you!

That sounds like a scary deal for people that dont have the extra money sitting around.

I would want to fight that.  That is not fair.

It is hard to believe they would try to get away with that.  Where are the original records?  Are they really doing this?
