"We're thinking about relocating to Brevard, NC"

Real Estate Agent with Looking Glass Realty

I love getting emails and phone calls that start with "We're thinking about relocating to Brevard" because it opens the door for me to tell people why we love living here so much.  All the real estate numbers, information about homes and land for sale in the Brevard area, information about things to do in Brevard, and what we can do to help them relocate to Brevard all come later because it's the quality life here that really matters.

We relocated to Brevard six years ago from the Tampa Bay area of Florida. We had lived there for 30+ years and watched the area grow, and grow, and grow...to the point that it bore little resemblance to the Florida we first got to know in the early 1970's. The heat, humidity, hurricanes, and hectic life style eventually got to us so when we were able to make a permanent move to Brevard, we jumped right to it. So today, when I talk about Brevard it starts with the small town feel and the people who live here because the change was so profound for us.

Brevard, North Carolina is the kind of place where you can walk down Main Street (yes, there really is a Main Street), and people make eye contact and ask how you're doing that day because they really want to know. It's the kind of place where conversations about cattle and farming can still be heard over a breakfast of biscuits and sausage gravy at a local restaurant. It's the kind of place where kids still build "soap boxes" and race them down "jail house hill" in the Squirrel Box Derby during the annual White Squirrel Festival on Memorial Day weekend. And when one of our local boys died in Afghanistan, it's the kind of place where the streets were closed, the flags were flown, and people lined the sidewalks in silence on the day he was brought home to rest.

Of course there are plenty of things to do around here but it's the "home spun" things I like the best High fallslike a trip to the local tail gate market where I can buy local honey and vegetables and locally raised organic beef. On any given Friday, we might head over to the Lake Toxaway community center for dinner and a night of local bluegrass and country music. But there's also hiking in Pisgah National Forest, hunting for the over 250 waterfalls, kayaking, and a host of other things to do. Our moderate, four season climate means there's always something you could be doing outside if you choose.

In Florida, the seasons were quite simple. Hot and hotter. Ok, there are a few weeks between February and March when Florida is actually really pleasant.  But blooming dogwoods, bright yellow daffodils, deep purple iris, and eye-popping tulips were part of my childhood growing up in Virginia and I had all but forgotten how incredibly beautiful spring is until we lived here. People will often ask about the summers and the winters (after all, who doesn't love spring and fall!).  There will be days in the summer when it gets hot for a few days, but then a front will go through and it will cool off again. Where we live, it's unusual for us to run our air conditioning for more than a few consecutive days. The same pattern is true in winter. We get enough snow that will close the schools for a few days, but it doesn't last long. And then, before you know it, it's spring again.

Just this week we were out with some clients and chose to take a ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway with them. It was one of those incredibleblue ridge parkway spring days and as we looked out over the mountains, they were awed and we were reminded once again of how beautiful this part of the country is. These days, as we drive around the Brevard area with folks looking for a new home, maybe a vacation home, or a bit of dirt where they can build, I feel incredibly lucky.  Lucky and blessed because I live in a place so beautiful, and in a place that is big enough to provide me with all the things I need, but small enough that it's easy to feel the southern culture and strong sense of community that embraces new comers and locals alike  And in a world that seems to be turned upside down lately, I look around at the life we've made for ourselves here in the mountains and can say without the slightest hesitation, that I just cannot imagine living anywhere else.

Hi Carol -- We are surely blessed to be living in this gorgeous Western NC area and all it has to offer.  A very nice localism post extolling why Brevard and the area is a great place to call home.

Robin and her hubby also grew up in Florida and immigrated here to the mountains.

I have a brother-in-law from that area.  He would NEVER move again.  He can ride his motorcycle nearly year around, and the scenery is spectacular.

Have a great Sunday!
