Great Photography And Real Estate / Not what You're Expecting

Great Photography And Real Estate my friend William Johnson (http://activerain.com/williamjohnson) is great at both. But, I want to take issue with two things he said in Hummingbird | Gotcha! Emplaning a great photo William said: "If you have ever tried to photograph a Hummingbird, if you get him at all, it is pure luck. Mostly because, unless you happen to have your camera around your neck when he appears, but the time you get it, he is long gone." Then responding to me William adds: "Hi Bill, My best shots have been lucky ones. Being at the right place at the right time with the right light."

Sorry William I disagree! Great photographers like you make their own luck! You put yourself in the right place with the proper equipment and experience to take advantage of opportunity. Decades ago Ansel Adams did same! You both made your own luck!

Adams and my friend have another even more relevant not so common, common trait. They recognize opportunity!

So why am I taking issue with a friend who's just being humble?

It's the word luck!

It's the fact that great photography and great real estate require the very same virtues. That's why William is so good!

Art Fettig said it best in his book "Selling Lucky" "Every one knows the difference between winners and losers is luck; ask any looser!" (http://www.allamericanspeakers.com/speakers/Art-Fettig/8978)

The "Great" make their own luck.

Great Photographers and REALTORS® start by having the right equipment with them!

Great Photographers and REALTORS® start by knowing how to use their equipment!

Great Photographers and REALTORS® recognizing opportunity!

Great Photographers and REALTORS® are constantly looking for opportunity!

Great Photographers and REALTORS® know many are as capable, many could have done it, but few are willing, most prefer to wait on luck.

As Fettig said: "Every one knows the difference between winners and losers is luck; ask any looser!"

Hi William, My best deals have been lucky ones. And, like you I earned them.

Bill, what a great post. I was just reflecting on something like that this morning. It finally occurred to me that I can get good at anything, I just have to work at it. I am not a good cook because I was born that way, I worked at it. I know if I work at it, I can be a better listing agent and a better photographer.

Thank you Kathy!

"Good" isn't good enough! Many people can get good if some one tells them what to do. The great go out and find some thing to do. You're a great cook because your willing to jump in and cook not because you do what Mama did but because you want the same things.

I'm sure you can be great at any thing you set your mind to. I'm looking forward to hearing about your progress.

Bill I am still laughing "Selling Lucky" "Every one knows the difference between winners and losers is luck; ask any looser!"

But the truth about luck is in another of your statements "The "Great" make their own luck."

George,

Art sent me his book and a tape in 1982 or 3, it arrived autographed to some one else. My foolish nose got so far out of joint that I didn't read or listen for to them for several years. My mistake! (Brenda allows me two mistakes a month, I rarely use them which is good because not reading every page of Art's book was a mistake.) I still listen to his tape and refer to his book.

Hi Bill, I feel quite honored to say the least and you can take issue and disagree with me anytime you like, :-) . My recollection professionally at least is the harder I have worked the luckier I got. When it comes to photography, I recall getting set up for a Cheetah shot at the Safari Park. It was a clear view and the photo I figured would come out fine. But it started to move and jumped up on a tree limb and then she stopped and posed right where I was standing. As I took the photo the people around me knew it was going to be special " Look how she just posed for you" and it did turn out extra special but it really was pure dumb luck. The following month on the cover of Zoo News there was what looked my photo. I rushed to see if it was and the difference was so little one could hardly tell that there was difference. They obviously knew where she liked to stand to show off her fur coat. Then I realized something. Photography takes a lot of patience and that improves the luck and this is the lesson I am slowly learning. Here is that photo. Enjoy and thank you so much. You really made me blush with pride.

William my friend,

I'm glad you approved.

It's amassing most of life's winners equate work and luck interchangeably.

It's in the working hard that the unique experiences happen.  If you are not there in the moment because you have been preparing for that time, that time doesn't materialize.  Good post, Bill.

I couldn't agree more! I love creating luck, you can't get a lucky getting that new listing if you don't talk to a potential seller, you can't get lucky picking up that new buyer unless you talked to someone who was thinking of buying. So, I'm going to go start talking to some lucky people today and see if they are looking to buy or sell with me!

Todd,

They are in deed "some lucky people" if they get you to help them!

Your luck and theirs was determined when you went out to talk to them.

Mini,

Thanks so much for the link!

I'm honored. I'm humbled. (in my own way)

I'm very impressed! Great Parents make great REALTORS! I read your post and Dunlap's letter.

Bill - I like your homage to "luck". It makes me think of the quote "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity".

Wendy,

Seneca ( 5BC - 65AD) also said:  "Be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favors you have received"

He was very insightful for a playwright, philosopher and politician. He'd have been a great salesman. In the end though he took his own life like his idol Sectaries.
