After months of surveying and examining the neighborhood, the city’s Landmark Preservation Commission has presented a plan that it hopes will lead to the establishment of a historic district in the East Village. The proposal would create two historic districts in the neighborhood: one would be located on 10th Street across from Tompkins Square Park, and the other would stretch from East 7th Street to East 2nd Street, between the Bowery and Avenue A. This is the first step for the Commission’s plan: the districts still have to be approved by the Landmarks Subcommittee of Community Board #3. If the plan is approved, examination of the neighborhood will begin, after which the LPC can determine the boundaries of an official historic district, if the findings of their investigation warrant such action. In a statement released Wednesday, the Greenwich Village Society for Historical Preservation lauded the LPC’s efforts, but they complained that several historic buildings in the neighborhood would be left out. They have compiled photos of the displaced buildings here, as well as photos of historic buildings within the proposed district here. The LPC’s meeting with the Landmarks Subcommittee takes place on May 12th at 30 Delancey Street.
