Where the road USED to be...

Even state highways succumb to the Mighty Mississippi River during the flood of 2011. When the water first goes over the road, markers show the water's depth and allow drivers to travel over the low spots. Eventually, the water is too deep to be traversed and the road is barricaded as the markers disappear into the flood. Highway 177, known as Big Bend Road in town, is now closed at the north edge of Cape Girardeau city limits.

Highway 177Hwy 177SFighting the river, one homeowner at the edge of the flood water has a raised driveway that allows access to the house on a hill to the right of the photo. As the water level rises, more dirt and gravel are added to keep the ever-changing drive above the water's reach.

Normally snaking between a golf course and the river, County Road 657 leads to a riverside park and a scenic overlook. It is now marked by the utility poles that line it. The Cape Rock Overlook remains accessible from the other end of County Road 657, though Twin Trees Park is inundated.County Rd 657

If you are looking for a foreclosure in Cape Girardeau, Perry, N. Scott, or Bollinger counties, I am the region's most experienced REO agent. As the area's ONLY Fannie Mae direct listing agent, I list more foreclosure properties than any other agent in this MLS. I am among the few local agents approved to both list and sell HUD properties. Give me a call if you are looking for help with the purchase of a foreclosure property.

The owner of that drive-way has had an on-going job to stay above the rising water.  Hopefully water will abate soon.. we are still getting rain here.. we went from being in drought to having flood warnings.

Floods and tornadoes seem to be the harbinger of spring, don't they? I hope Oklahoma stays out of the drought zone all summer.

Joy~ It is getting worse. I posted a blog entry today about a levee system that the Corps of Engineers will be blowing up tonight to relieve stress on the river system. While I am high and dry and only inconvenienced by the closed roads, 100 homes will flood tonight with the breach of that levee.
