Did you call back all your MISSED calls today?

girl missed a callI think there is a new "norm" starting to develop with the next generation of phone users.  Have you had someone call you & not leave a message?  Did they question why you didn't call them back later?

I've started noticing that people in their early 20's call people & don't leave messages.  They also would rather text or email too, but that's a whole nother topic.

I know when we have these younger generation clients, it's really important that you establish phone etiquette expectations up front to avoid mis-communication.

Next time you get a missed call, consider dialing back.  Just in case it was an on purpose call.  Your future client will be happy that you called back.  Worst case scenario, wrong number & no big deal :)

Both my children, in their 20s, prefer to text.  If I call, they may or may not answer, but if I text, they always do.  I have also begun noticing this with younger clients and agents.  You are right in saying that it is something to be aware of and discussing beforehand is a good idea.

I hadn't noticed that it was younger callers....but if I can't catch the phone in time, I (at least) look at the number and go from there, but it IS case-by-case. Every call is long distance for me and I almost feel as if it is not important enough to them and that's why they didn't leave a message.

I also have on VM, that sys if it's after 5pm (it's my home that they're calling, because this is where my business is) that I will call them back the next day. I STILL have people saying to call them right away and get calls at night quite often. Depending upon the type of call, I will often call them that night anyway.

I've noticed this trend, too, Christina.  I think, in any business, it's a good thing to establish ways of communication.  I have many client's younger than 35 and they all prefer texting.

Hi Christina, I have also noticed this and in one of my classes they encouraged us to use the same medium to communicate as our client is using.  Have a great evening.

People want and they want NOW... Don't even have time to leave a message and wait for a call back.  Seems like they just move on.

Christina,

I actually appreciate it when poeple I know don't leave a message. The missed call is all I need and it keeps my inbox from getting clogged with redundant messages.

Christina, I remember calling back a '503' number only to realize that it was an unwated call.

May be, it's a good idea to call back the number after checking it on http://www.800notes.com/ to see if it is a telemarketer or someone else...

Christina, I have a friend (older, like me!) and he rarely leaves a message. He doesn't want me to leave messages either. He's not confortable with the voice mil system on his mobile and it costs him minutes to dial in and listen to his messages. He has instructed me to to just hang up and he will call me back when he can - usually within a few minutes. Oh well, tha's what makes the world go 'round, I guess!
