Alabama's down, but getting up- "The scab's starting to itch"

"The scab's starting to itch a little bit". That's the word from The Birmingham News' photojournalists a bit earlier today. Things are by no means "normal" (whatever that's meant), but there are surely signs of healing.

I called up to speak with a buddy of mine that's been with their staff since '89, and he was out hustling and taking more photos. Frank Couch and the rest of the folks there have dedicated an untold number of hours towards taking photos of last week's devastation. Now, more photos of recovery, togetherness and the human spirit.

Yes, the scab appears to be healing. Neighbors continue to help each other- because neighbors continue to need help. "I'll get that back at the house fixed after I help you get yours done" is no rarity. Hustle and heart, it's all about hustle and heart. Alabama folks are hustling to help each other because they've got big hearts- helping their neighbor in need because 1) God said to love our neighbor, and 2) it's just the right thing to do.

Keep fighting, Alabama! Keep your heads up, help each other and accept help when you need it- there's no shame in needing help.

There are times these days that instill a great deal of pride in me- not pride of myself, but in the spirit of the folks back home. The Main Street Market in Warrior remained open for business the day of the storm- even with a 100-foot tree resting on it's roof. Neighbors are helping each other and remembering America's great. The flag still flys.

And Alabama keeps the faith.

May the good Lord above continue to bless and keep my Alabama home.

Sweet Home Alabama... my Great-Grandfather and Grandfather were from Enterprise / Ozark, before moving to Florida in the 1920's.

Today my friend Bill left with a "Rescue Team" from his Baptist Church in West Florida.  They are taking two semi-trucks with supplies, chain saws, and generators.  They have a third truck that will serve as a Mobile Kitchen for the workers.

On I-10 today near Tallahassee, I passed several "Caravans" of rescue trucks and vehicles.  One was Manatee County (a Baptist Group), another was a bunch of Electric Company Trucks, and yet another was a group of trucks with a Methodist Church Logo on the sides.

God Bless Alabama,  and thanks be to God for those who are volunteering their time, money, and lives to help those who are in desperate need.

Hi, Fred:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Thank your friend for what he's doing, too.  As I just wrote in another comment, my brother-in-law has been working in Mobile, went home to Birmingham and back last weekend and will do it again this weekend.  He'll have a semi truck full of supplies by the time he hits home.  He and my sister are going to head to a number of the smaller, hard-hit areas in the Northeast corner of the state.  God bless Alabama, indeedw and all from everywhere that are reaching to help herw from without and within alike.
