I'm no longer a Postcard Virgin!

I have long harboured a fear of going door to door, leaving "Just Listed" or "Just Sold" cards in people's doors.  I don't know, maybe someone really scary will want to talk to me.  I may have to make conversation with someone.  I can give no rational explanation as to why I was terrified of doing the "walk-about".  I have ordered the cards from our Administrator in the past, only to have them sit for way too long to be classified as Just Listed.

Last week, I ordered more cards for a new listing and put them in my briefcase, full of bravado.  The weekend came.....and went.  Okay, Monday, for sure!  Mmmmmmm, Monday, gee didn't I want to completely re-do my accounting system.  That's right....and it should be done right away, no question.  Feeling privately sheepish at the end of the day, I vowed to take those cards and venture out into the neighbourhood of the listing.

This morning I parked my car on the street, pulled out my postcards, a few business cards and a notebook, just in case someone wanted a CMA right there on the spot.  First house, no one came out with a shotgun.  Second house, no one home.   Third house, chatted with the cat on the stoop.  And so on it went.  Had a lovely little chat with a 4 year old boy playing in his front yard who wanted to know what exactly I was doing, how many cards I had, and was that my red truck up the road a bit.  A couple of times I could tell there was someone in the house watching me, but was careful not to make eye contact, and as I was walking away, could hear the door slowly opening to see just what I had left for them.

I delivered 20 cards, and felt like an idiot for not doing this sooner.  I got into this business because I LIKE talking to people.  I like helping them find or sell a home.  What better way to start a conversation, no expectations, perhaps make a connection for down the road, than by a friendly little chat as I leave my postcard for them?  I may have found a new passion.  I'm not bothering people, trying to get them to buy anything, just a gentle reminder that I am in the neighbourhood and am a walker!

We all have bugaboos that hold us back, I am so glad I got this one out of my system.  Can't wait for that next listing!

Rhonda, you could just mail the postcards to the neighbors.

Congratulations. I too harbor that fear. It's a feeling very hard to explain, but it does exist. Glad you were able to get past it.

Tammie - yes, I have mailed the postcards, but would have to do over 700, as we are a rural area and you can't pick and chose where they specifically go.  A bit steep when I'm still in the beginning stages!  Also, I thought by walking the postcards out, the new listing was near my own neighbourhood, might be good to meet more of the neighbours, nervous as I was about it!

Dennis - Thanks!  As I said, I am actually looking forward to that next new listing for more reasons than just the paycheque!
