Across from my home and across the parking lot of the Ball Park from my home is the old Picnic Basket. I guess it was the old "Keg" and quite a few other restaurants in it's day. In the eight years I've lived across the street from it I think it was vacant for about 4 years and then it had been two different Mexican resturants three times. Last time, and two times ago, it was Tio Lalos. The owner's name was Edwardo and he says Tio Lalo's means Uncle Eddies. Edwardo found it didn't work to good to be living in Texas and operating a restaurant here in Minot ND.

The City finally decided it was time for this building to go so they would have more parking for the Ball Diamond. I'm not sure if they gave the building away or sold it. Given our sever housing shortage in Minot some genius do it yourself-er decided he would move it to a neighboring town and turn it into his home. Unfortunately I don't think this do it yourself-er had the brain power to pull off this idea.

My first clue was that he was surprised that the floor didn't come up with the building when he jacked it up. I'm no genius myself but even I figured that this building was sitting on a cement slab. I'm also smart enough to figure that it's going to cost a fortune to put good modern windows into this building much less turning a big open space into a 3 or 4 bedroom home. Now, with the home sitting up about 18" on jacks, the proud new owner is building a floor with 2 X 12's under the building and attaching it.

I gotta wonder how much money this fellow is saving.

Bob - looks like your view will be changing!  It will be interesting to see the end result!  Be sure and provide the "after" photo when the project is finished.

Barbara, how funny that the change in view never even crossed my mind! Now I really am looking forward to it as the other side is residential and it should really be an improvement.

Richard, I really want to ask the guy what this is costing him but frankly I'm scared to just in case he is about to explode over the stress of the unexpected expenses.

Hi Bob,

this sure sounds like the beginning of a good red neck joke.  :)

Ha, I think April is on to something!  Funny that I was just thinking today about how some buildings might be better off just being razed and then starting from scratch....

I like that April, I think I will start working on it.

Brenda, I agree with both you and April and I certainly believe the fellow who got this building would have done better dismantling it and using the wood in some other fashion.

Gonna be funny to see how this one turns out.  Maybe you will get lucky enough to be around when they actually try to start moving it

Bob J. I hope I am around and I like Gabrielle's idea to video record it.

GOOD MORNING GABRIELLE! It may be worth my investing in a new recorder. I have some real doubt that this building will make the entire trip intact even though he is spending a lot of money on that new floor.

Bob, renovations are great but one should keep in mind the costs. You seem to be right questioning "the savings" a new owner is hoping for. I would love to see a finished product - keep us posted.
