Adios Amigo Tio Lalos
Across from my home and across the parking lot of the Ball Park from my home is the old Picnic Basket. I guess it was the old "Keg" and quite a few other restaurants in it's day. In the eight years I've lived across the street from it I think it was vacant for about 4 years and then it had been two different Mexican resturants three times. Last time, and two times ago, it was Tio Lalos. The owner's name was Edwardo and he says Tio Lalo's means Uncle Eddies. Edwardo found it didn't work to good to be living in Texas and operating a restaurant here in Minot ND.
The City finally decided it was time for this building to go so they would have more parking for the Ball Diamond. I'm not sure if they gave the building away or sold it. Given our sever housing shortage in Minot some genius do it yourself-er decided he would move it to a neighboring town and turn it into his home. Unfortunately I don't think this do it yourself-er had the brain power to pull off this idea.
My first clue was that he was surprised that the floor didn't come up with the building when he jacked it up. I'm no genius myself but even I figured that this building was sitting on a cement slab. I'm also smart enough to figure that it's going to cost a fortune to put good modern windows into this building much less turning a big open space into a 3 or 4 bedroom home. Now, with the home sitting up about 18" on jacks, the proud new owner is building a floor with 2 X 12's under the building and attaching it.
I gotta wonder how much money this fellow is saving.
