Another new Consumer-oriented site

I just learned about Neighboroo.com and spent some time touring it, including looking at information for Carlsbad, so I thought I would share this with others who may want to check it out (or perhaps already have...maybe I am behind the times here).

The site, yet another, is proported to provide helpful information for consumers around the country regarding things like rent, median home prices, average commute time, ethnic demographics, politics, crime and a range of other tidbits. They plan to add property tax information in the near future (hmm, wonder if that will be any better than what Zillow is providing). They also do suggest that consumers who are buying a home "contact a realtor or another trusted source to get a targeted assessment of a particular neighborhood."

You plug in the location and then can "visualize the data" for that area in a pop-up window, plus drill down on each to get more details (e.g., an explanation of commute time). It is not clear where the data come from, although they state that information is obtained from a variety of state, federal and local resources (e.g.,m census) so of course the reliability and accuracy may be in question. Certainly, given the census, the data are not up to the minute. But this may not matter to consumers, who may stll want to see the trends for different areas.

The site is easy to use, and I expect it will appeal to consumers, especially those looking to move to other areas and who are looking for any information they can find. I tried this for Carlsbad, but they only looked at one of the zip codes, rather than all 4. If someone knows the actual zipcode this is not an issue, but if not they will only see part of the data they might want.

It will be interesting to see the response from consumers and agents. Check it out and share your thoughts!

Jeff, Teresa Boardman has some comments on this site at her Active Rain blog:  http://activerain.com/blogsview/15522/Neighbor-Nieghborhood-Information-site.  She is concerned about the accuracy of the data.  Since no one seems to know the source it's hard to know what's true and what's not.

Jeff,

Thanks for the link.  Not sure where they get their date, but I checked it and seems to be pretty accurate for my area.

Jeff, I had not seen the site before. I played around with it a little bit before commenting. Some of the date that I saw was is a little off, but I will play around with it later.  Thanks for the info.

The part that intrigued me the most was one percent of the people taking public transportation pretty much anywhere except the major big cities. I can check data on our local government sites and see if that figure holds up.
