What is Handel's Messiah and Mendelssohn's Elijah?
As time has gone on, groups like The Lynden Choral Society have been performing Handel's Messiah and choosing a person in the community to bless with the proceeds over cost.
The Lynden Choral Society's Director, Gerald Rutgers, Pastor of Hopewell Luthern Church in Everson, responding to a question, what's special about the group?, " No where else in the community do people come together from many different church backgrounds in the spirit of unity to sing classical music and most importantly music that brings the wonderful Good News of the celebration of new life and hope found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ."
The cost includes an orchestra, director, and location. The singers within The Lynden Choral Society perform as a gift to the chosen recipient.
The Spring performance has an interesting story. A young boy was chosen to receive the blessing of the
proceeds and had already received so much community support that he and his family decided to pass it on to someone else. He had been going to Emma's mother, Jill, for physical therapy, and so his parents knew of the need of Emma, and decided to ask if she would accept the gift. "12 year old Emma Morrison, a Whatcom County MS Student and her family, which includes Mom and Dad, Mitchell and Jill Smith, and Owen, their 9 year old boy, have been on an
unexpected journey since November when
she was diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anemia
which caused her bone marrow to stop functioning properly.
Emma has undergone numerous platelet and blood transfusions and just before Christmas a bone marrow transplant donated by Owen. Due to infection risks, Emma, will remain our of school until next year as long as everything goes well. Join us as we seek to encourage this family."
The Lydnen Choral Society has already performed two wonderful concerts, and the last of the trio will be this Saturday at 3:00 PM at Christ The Servant Luthern Church located at 2600 Lakeway Dr., Bellingham.
