One of the greatest privileges of serving on the District Board of Trustees for Pasco-Hernando Community College is to participate in the Commencement Ceremonies. I get to don my cap and gown, join the procession of dignitaries and sit on the dais, watching the glowing faces of the graduates.
I love watching the faces of the graduates as their names and accomplishments are announced, and the pride in their steps as they walk across the stage to receive their diploma and shake the hand of the College President.
We think of college students as fresh faced young men and women just out of high school, but the average age of the Community College student is 28-32 years old. Many have had to put their education on hold because of unforseen circumstances, and when they get the opportunity to finish their education, they do it with a passion.
At yesterday's Commencement, we heard a representative from the Trustees and Faculty give words of encouragement to the graduates, wishing them the best on their life journey. The most inspiring of all is when a chosen member of the student body speaks to his or her peers.
This year Shalamar McNair, a young African American man, SGA Senator and Vice President of Men of Excellence, spoke to his fellow graduates. He did not speak about his hardships in life; he did not brag about his accomplishments; he expressed Gratitude.
He thanked the College Foundation and donors for the scholarships that allowed those less fortunate to have the opportunity to get a diploma. He thanked the Mentors in the programs like Take Stock in Children, Black Brown and College Bound and Men of Excellence, that believe in at risk students and take a genuine interest in their success. He thanked the professors, who made a positive imprint in the psyches of the students.
It was very powerful in its simplicity, and the energy level in the room increased as each student recognized all the people in their lives that made this moment possible.
This is my twelfth year as a trustee, and over the years I have watched as students graduate and become an integral part of the community in which I live. Congratulations to all of the students and best wishes for your future success!
