Slab v. Crawlspace – The Showdown!

I’m curious about perceptions in other parts of the country. Here in Raleigh, NC, a slab foundation is considered “cheap,” and since all concrete cracks eventually, I have never been a fan. Then I started showing homes to a friend from California who has also spent considerable time in Arizona. She specifically wanted a slab foundation, even though she was looking in the higher price ranges. I asked her why, and she said that’s what they have where she is from. She also said they were less creepy, and you didn’t have to worry about bugs as much.

So I would love a breakdown from my AR buddies to give me some better insight on the pros and cons of slab and crawlspace foundations.

I’ll start:

Slab –Pro: Less expensive to build and apparently less creepy and helps with bugs.

Slab – Con: Perception of being cheap, eventual cracking, the inability to move plumbing and electrical after installation

Crawlspace – Pro: Perception of being a more custom-type of construction, ability to rewire and move things around under the house, storage.

Crawlspace – Con: I’ll admit it. I won’t go into my own crawlspace for fear of spiders and other creepy crawlies.

Thoughts?

Nothing is more fun than being deep in a crawl space; your flashlight fails, total darkness.  You grope your way across the ground, then you feel a sticky spider web on your face and in your hair.   And you panic, thinking "Where is the Spider?!"

However, pull up the carpet in most Florida Slab-On-Grade houses, and you WILL see the settling cracks.

Ewwww.....  I would have a complete panic attack!

I've definitely seen my fair share of crack in concrete slabs.  Actually, every slab I've seen after a few years looks like that.
