Slim Down in Just 15 Minutes Per Day!

Come on, you know you want to do it!  No, no, this is not a scam. It's a proven technique that really works. Just commit to 15 minutes per day and you, too, can slim down - your home's load of paper.

If you're totally in control and there are no unfiled papers at your house, then I guess you can go on to other tasks that need your attention. But if you find that you're tired of looking at paper, paper everywhere - and it causes you to feel too tired to even look at it, try Judy's Guaranteed Slim Down Paper Romp.

Messy Desk

First, pick the pile of papers that cause you the most distress. In my house, it's the mail. I dearly love Herb, but he does have a tendency to kind of trail around the place, opening mail and then leaving it kind of anywhere. Oh, and I might have a teensy problem with my own mail some days when I'm really busy.

Between the two of us, suddenly the kitchen table becomes unusable. So, I put on a good dancing CD, set the timer for 15 minutes and stand at the table with the recycling bag close at hand. Dancing is optional while sorting and recycling, but it makes the process more lighthearted. And it works like a charm. 15 minutes, and the paperwork is slimmed down. 15 minutes a day, and the paperwork slowly gets under control.

Clear horizontal surfaces? Well, that just changes my whole mindset. Even on the busiest day, knowing that 15 minutes will bring a sense of clarity and serenity is usually enough to get me to spend them slimming down the paper load.

Good title; it almost looked like spam, but was actually useful.

great suggestions, especially the timer. The music is a good idea too and helps make it seem like you're not really doing something NOT fun.

Hi Colleen - Especially for tasks that feel like too much work, setting a timer really helps. It's quite amazing what can be accomplished in just 15 minutes. And, really, why NOT have some fun while you're at it? Upbeat music always puts me in a better mood!

Hi Peter - For many of us, our busy lives can mean a bit of a pile up of paper and other items. I hope the dance and clean helps you clear your table!

Unfiled pares can become overwhelming. In terms of efficiency, it's best to deal with the paper once and once only.

Hi Brian - That's very true, and definitely the most efficient way to handle the load of paper that arrives each day.

Hi Judy~

I keep my desk as tidy as could be. I can't work or even think in a messy environment! My attention to detail is a blessing and a curse.

I am disappointed that I can't slim down in just fifteen minutes per day!

Thanks for the fun tip!

Hi Valerie - The music can really be the key to a happy encounter with paper. Upbeat and fun, or something classical and serene - your choice. I'm really happy this gives you a different option!

Hi Judi - Well now - that is truly awesome! Take your 15 minutes a day into a fast dance - maybe salsa - around your home, and it could turn into a slimming evening activity!  ;-)

Judy, divide and conquer. Breaking the large task into smaller, more manageable time frames make it easier to accomplish the almost impossible. Once you get started, the thrill of seeing progress can motivate you to do more. great suggestion.

Judy--love the concept of combining something you love with something you don't love so much and making it all so manageable.
