Ghost architecture in Searcy Arkansas. Makes you wonder what it once looked like.

My blog buddy, Anita, once had me distracted by looking for "ghost signs" which were old signs painted on brick buildings.  We blogged a few of those.

While downtown in Searcy Arkansas I looked up from my parking space and saw "ghost architecture."

Yes, that's a good name for it.  These brick buildings have been renovated but there are signs of the past all over them.

I wonder whether we could get someone who is an expert with Photoshop who could give us the original view of these buildings.  They liked curves!!

That KFC sign is impressive. What's the location, Barbara?

AMEN to Don's question, where is the location?  I"m betting West Market Street known in the good old days as "spit and whittle" street.

Barbara,

So would the KFC sign go to the 1960's. That is when I remember first seeing the franchise, but it might have been in the south much earlier.

Right, Anita. It's at W. Market and N. Spruce. Looks like 115 W. Market for the middle one and 119 for the bottom one.

The top one is across the street and about the middle of block toward N. Gum. Now to figure out what was there.

How about a little help from Anita's phone directory.

Yep, Super Sleuths, it is on W Market.  I was parked to run into an attorney's office, I think, when I got distracted.

Steven, that sign does not date back that far.  Our KFC man has had the franchise in Searcy for quite a while and I think he redid the building but it doesn't date to the 60's.

Don, I do wish we had a picture of that street but you know who is real good with that photoshop!!!!  Just make us a picture of how it would have been!!

I was thinking one of the buidlings.....the first one....might have been Chandler's Groc. Store...  My phone book lists it as 201 W. Market, phone 691.   Can't think of any other store in that block.  I really didn't "hang out" on that street!   Some of the buildings were the back of the stores on West Arch....
