Ways to Save Money + Energy and Lower Your Eletricity Bill in Baton Rouge

Once a month, I have paramedics on stand-by.

“It’s the biggest one yet, Elizabeth…I’m coming to join you.”

It could possibly be the biggest one yet! Yes, the electricity bill. As the bill steadily increases, my blood pressure follows and one of these days, I might just have to dial 9-1-1 due to the B-I-L-L. So, to avoid cardiac arrest and Elizabeth, I have decided to come up with a plan. I shall call it “OPERATION PAY ATTENTION”. After sending out numerous energy munchkins, I have been informed that the number one way to show that electricity bill who’s boss is to enforce OPERATION PAY ATTENTION. Yes, we use our own mind power to reduce the cost of power. It’s genius and who is this “Attention” guy anyway? He must be loaded. So, please…if you will, come along with me on a journey through the Kill-A-Watt Galaxy. Buckle up and please, pay attention!

OPERATION PAY ATTENTION

Pay Attention to The Fridge

You can set the fridge temp between 36-39 degrees Fahrenheit and the freeze between 0-5 degrees Fahrenheit.
Clean fridge coils regularly.

Don’t hang out in front of the fridge. Open it. Grab it. Shut it.

Try to defrost food in the fridge before cooking
.
Try not to put in uncovered liquids because their evaporation will make the fridge work harder.

Cool cooked food before you put in fridge.

Pay attention to The Microwave & Stove

You wanna clean the oven? Hit the self-cleaning button after cooking a meal…since it’s already heated.
Match the size of your pretty pots and pans to the size of the burner.
Limit opening and closing the oven.

Pay Attention to The Dishwasher & Garbage Disposal

Try not to use the garbage disposal as much.
Try to only run the dishwasher when it is full.
Get your husband   wife um…magical fairy to hand wash the dishes.
Be sure to clean that dishwasher drain. Ew, fun.
Stop the dishwasher when it gets to the heat cycle & let them air dry.
Go ahead and let those dishes air dry…a little clean air never hurt anyone.

Pay Attention to Mr. Dryer and Mrs. Washer

Do your loads of laundry back to back,  Mr. Dryer is heated and ready.
Fold clothes as soon as you get them out of the dryer, eliminating the need to iron. Oh no, not the iron!
You must stick your hand in the lint trap of the dryer & clean it!
Try to use cold water for the rinse cyles.
You can dry your clothes half of the way and then air dry them the rest.
Go ahead and turn down the temperature on Mrs. Washer.

Pay Attention to Lights + Lights + Lights

Turn off lights when you leave a room.
Using table lamps are better than using overhead lights to light a room.
Only use the darn lights when the darn lights are needed.
No reason for you to keep your outside porch on unless it makes you feel safer or the pizza delivery guy needs to find your house.
Change your lights bulbs to energy saving bulbage.
Get creative and try using motion detectors (outside), dimmers and/or timers.

Pay Attention to Cooling & Heating

Don’t forget to change your air filter regularly.
Only cool or heat the rooms you are using. Go ahead and close vents or shut the doors to the rooms you are not using.
Be sure to make ‘sure’ that all your windows and doors are sealed.
Check furniture, etc. to make sure nothing is blocking the vents you need.
If you have ceiling fans, put them to use!

                   OPERATION PAY ATTENTION FREEBIES

Remember to unplug items that are charging.
Turn off all appliances at night, it’s night time for everyone.
Check for leaky faucets and fix them.
Give your ole’ heating and cooling systems a tune-up.
Install foam gaskets behind electrical outlet & plate covers.
If you aren’t at the house, no need to keep things running, turn them off and shut it down.
