IN MANCHESTER, CONNECTICUT, on Thanksgiving Day, a route is marked through town, starting on Main Street. Over 60,000 people participate.  This number grows every year.  Runners, walkers, wheelchairs, you name it, everyone loves this road race.  We fondly call it the Turkey Race, since it is held on Thanksgiving Morning. Officially, it is the Manchester Road Race.  There are some teams, mostly locals, but, runners come from throughout the world.  I remember runners from Ireland, Africa and Indonesia. I have participated, but, as a walker.  It takes a little over an hour.   My children have participated many times as runners.  All along the route there are folks lined up to encourage you on your way.  There are live bands,(polka, jazz, Irish, Scottish, rock) boom boxes, cheering sections at critical spots (hill by Highland Park Market) and refreshing water is given to you. It is held, no matter what the weather.  People wear favorite colors, costumes, run barefoot, run in teams and run in families, with generations participating together.  Our own, Honorable Govenor Jodi Rell even attends to wish the runners God's speed.

This morning, we went out for breakfast on Main St, Manchester.  I smiled, for as I was walking to the restaurant, there were many runners coming towards me.  You see, the time is near.  Folks will be practicing the route, mostly to beat the time they had last year.  It is such a good community event, it brings out the best of the best.  Whether running, walking, nurturing the runners, or cheering them on, and mind you, the weather can be cool, hot, rain, snow or wind.  Everyone attends, even dogs come along to see the runners!  The spectators and the participants. Local tv and radio stations broadcast live from Main St.  Vendors of every kind line the street.  Some of the restaurants open and then, donate the proceeds of the day to a community project.  I have had listings on the race route before.  Not this year.  It is great for advertising, sometimes it even is on tv.

If you love to run, be sure to check out this Manchester Road Race, held on Turkey Day!
