Gumming Up The Works

By
Home Inspector with Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC 3380-000723

It was a dark and stormy night...

It really was!  We had just moved into our new house, about 13 1/2 years ago.  It still had that new house smell.

OK, I had done the final walk through and there were 400 things the builder "promised" to take care of.  Yes I ended up doing most of them myself.  I like to take care of things right away.  But the house still had that new-house smell, and we had never experienced that before.

It was September and deep into the night.  I could hear a storm whipping up in the distance, the thunder waking me up.  It finally hit, with some force!  Before long we were pounded with rain and buffeted with wind.

Wondering about my untested new roof's ability to handle the wind and rain, IT began.

Slowly at first, kind of gently.  Then the wind changed direction and IT grew louder and very insistent.

My attention changed from the roof to the source of IT.  A banging screen, slightly too small for the window it was protecting.  The screen did not fit.  And IT was giving me a fit.  Not many more minutes longer and I decided I had to do something about IT.  I like to take care of things right away.

Thinking about how to handle this I needed a solution quickly, but one that was temporary.

Duct tape actually came to mind!

However, the thought also came to mind that it might stick too tightly to the screen and bend the frame when I pulled it off.

So what's a home inspector to do?

Then it hit me!

I could take care of IT with CHEWING GUM!

Of course!  Brilliant!

Chewing gum would be quick and temporary!  And I could get to the problem and handle it again in the morning.  I like to take care of things right away.

Going to my stash, and I don't remember, it may have been Juicy Fruit or Spearmint, I began chewing away.

Sticking the gum into the slot to tighten down that screen, it stuck!  And it worked perfectly!

IT was no longer a problem!

Congratulating myself on my repair savvy and hearing no more noise, I went back to bed.

It worked perfectly.  And in the morning it would come right off and I could do something more permanent.  You see, I like to take care of things right away.

Well, I didn't take care of it right away.  That window has not been opened again in 13 1/2 years.  If any of you scientists out there want to know what a piece of CHEWING GUM looks like after 13 1/2 years of being baked in the morning sun and freezing in zero degree cold, regular wind and rain and so forth, here it is!

That is one hearty little guy!  It has really done a good job!  This scientific information could change screen repair technology for years to come.

RIGHT NOW I'M THINKING PATENT YOU KNOW...

It occurred to me that the gum is still there and I snapped this photo.

A more permanent solution to IT is still needed however.  For sure I'll get to that tomorrow.

I like to take care of things right away.

Ye Jay that works just fine, just as long as you don't loose that roll of tape.

The gum probably would have outlasted the duct tape - looks like a nice case of mold on the gum too

Jay,

I once had an old tag come off a furnace. Had barely been on there. Seller's were a pain and I figured would complain if it was off, same answer. Dentyne to the rescue.

Mel - duct tape probably would have unraveled and fallen apart.  I don't know if it is mold or just blown dirt and such all over the gum, but I haven't licked it to make sure.

Charlie - I think Billy is eyeing this great product carefully.

Steve - and why not!  It's probably still on there.

It worked here Steve!  And it worked on that plane Nutsy flew home.  Fortunately it lasted long enough to land the thing, however hard a landing it was!

Billy Jays ought to start selling that chewing gum.

By the way, I haven't stopped by to read any of yours or anyone else's blogs for a while because we just had a new addition to the family, and she seems to be taking up all of my blog reading time.

Chewing gum, I would have never thought of that... Duct tape, yes, chewing gum, not likely...
