Setting up House

I have managed to make my yard very attractive to all sorts of birds, and it is really paying off this year with some rather unusual bird sightings.  One of our favorite things is having the birds take up residence in one of our bird houses.  The luxury flat below has been a favorite of our Carolina Wrens for the last few years, but this year a Chickadee couple beat them to it.

Red Birdhouse

On the other end of the garden sits this bungalow that really is quite a nice home despite a piece of missing trim.  Hopefully this year's resident will not cause more damage.  Someone is doing some staging inside, but I have yet to see who the new neighbors will be.

Hey Chris, thanks for the bird house info. I've been thinking of building some for our backyard. Gotta get some plans. Do you have any you'd like ot pass on? I find the second one interesting as we live in a log house.

What a great birdie land lord you are!!!   I am afraid to get to friendly with the birds as I dont' have mature trees for one and lots of stray cats for another!

Great job and love the pictures!

It will be fun to see who the little stagers are!  They must have had a super realtor help them find this charming little home....

Hi Chris,

Great houses!  We keep a list from the Audubon Society and mark off new arrivals to our yard.  Spotting a new bird is always fun.  Haven't seen any unusual ones in a while however.

Hi Ed - I just hope that a woodpecker doesn't try to take up residence in one of the houses.  They have a tendancy to widen the doorway.  : )

Hi Ted - I am proud to say that the paint jobs are mine, but the building was left to others.  I haven't built a bird house since my boy scouting days.  : )

Hi Deborah - Glad you enjoyed the photos.  These bird houses are pretty high up on slippery poles to keep the non-flying critters from getting in.

Hi Brenda - I imagine that their REALTOR is very active on twitter.  : )

Hi William - I can build a lot of things when it comes to my home, but building bird houses is not something I have tried for a long time.  Maybe I will have to give it a try (I did have to rebuild the red one last year, after all, after a woodpecker decided to widen the hole!).

Hi Lisa - This year I have seen a Scarlet Tanager (which I had never seen here before) and quite a few sightings of a Pileated Woodpecker (which I had only seen rarely before).  It's been great fun.

Hi Rob - The birds love it when you roll out the royal treatment.  Plenty of food, water, lodging, and places to hide and you suddenly become a sanctuary.  It is quite enjoyable.

Chris,

You do a GREAT job attracting beautiful birds to beautiful homes in beautiful Connecticut! This has to be a destination for the elite, just because of you!

If I was a bird, I'd be flying to CT!

Hi Chris,

We have never seen a Scarlet Tanager, Pileated Woodpecker (lots of downy, hairy and yellow bellied sapsuckers), or a bluebird in our yard.  :(  I am jealous.  Maybe I need to put up a few houses.

Chris, These are luxury flats!  Great to look at as you do your bird watching.  Chickadees make great nests for their young.  Hopefully you will have some great photo ops in the days and weeks ahead.

Hi Lisa - We have lots of shrubs, trees, bird baths, food, houses--a regular luxury resort.  : )

Hi Gloria - It seems early, but the racket the birds were making this morning sounded like the youngsters are starting to make themselves heard.
