One of my favorite plants in my yard is the hibiscus. I have two of these beauties and the other one started blooming a couple of weeks ago.
This is the first bloom from this plant.
Growing hibiscus in the Arizona heat and dry conditions can be trying, but they do grow beautifully here with a little help. They're very hardy eaters and need fertilizer from spring through fall. And, they are frost tender so plant them out of the wind. Be prepared to cover them with protection during the few freeze nights we get in the winter. We used old sheets and double cover them. We put one sheet around the base of the plant and another over the plant with rocks on the edges of the sheets at the ground level to keep them from blowing off.
This year, we lost several plants because of the abnormally cold nights, but not this beauty.
If you think desert landscape is all brown, think again. Check with your local Arizona nursery about these beautiful hibiscus when planning your garden and landscape.
