Arizona landscaping - the hibiscus

One of my favorite plants in my yard is the hibiscus.  I have two of these beauties and the other one started blooming a couple of weeks ago.

This is the first bloom from this plant.

Growing hibiscus in the Arizona heat and dry conditions can be trying, but they do grow beautifully here with a little help.  They're very hardy eaters and need fertilizer from spring through fall.  And, they are frost tender so plant them out of the wind.  Be prepared to cover them with protection during the few freeze nights we get in the winter.  We used old sheets and double cover them.  We put one sheet around the base of the plant and another over the plant with rocks on the edges of the sheets at the ground level to keep them from blowing off.

This year, we lost several plants because of the abnormally cold nights, but not this beauty.

If you think desert landscape is all brown, think again.  Check with your local Arizona nursery about these beautiful hibiscus when planning your garden and landscape.

Juli, beautiful photo and love the color. Hibiscus is hard to grow in So Cal. Must be because of the cold nights we get in winter.

Thanks, Pamela.  I'm sure you're cold nights are as bad as ours, LOL.  Seriously, these just take a little extra care and do very well in Arizona.

Juli, being from Hawaii, I LOVE hibiscus...in all colors (red, pink, white, yellow and all the multi-colored ones, too!) :)

Hey Juli... my hibiscus survived a few nights of freezing in Feb. but here is a pic of my first blooms:

Thanks for the "sheet tips" for next winter season!

There is nothing more beautiful than desert flowers, and this one is no exception.

Joni, you typically have the help of more moisture than we have.  I think you cheat, LOL.

Leilani - I just love these plants.  The first time I ever went to Hawaii, I always knew I wanted to be able to grow them - they are SO beautiful.  I love the new hybrids that are being developed.  The myriad of colors is amazing.

Wow, Teri, I've only gotten one bloom from each plant so far.  And, you're welcome for the sheet tips - the plant covers they sell at the nurseries are fairly expensive.  But, do use two.

Thanks, Jane.  The saguaros are just starting to bloom - now that is a desert bloom at it's best.  But, I need a ladder for those photos - hopefully, this weekend.

Thanks, Laura - it's always such a pleasure when this one blooms, especially when we had an abnormally cold winter.  Well, by our standards, LOL.
