Motivational Monday: Three Sides of the Coin

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Second Self Virtual Assistance

flipping coinYou've most likely heard the phrase "two sides of a coin", meaning there are two sides to every argument.  Well, I say there are actually three sides of the coin: my side, your side and the truth.  Everyone's opinion is a culmination of their past experiences, present situation and the frame of mind they are in at the time.  My truth is not the same as your truth.  However, your point can feel just as valid to you as my point is to me.  The trick to resolving any problem is to listen to the other side's argument, give your side and, hopefully, come to a resolution as to how to fix the problem and move on.

I am a bit of a reality TV junkie.  So many times, you see people arguing over something (sometimes trivial, sometimes not) and what we see through the unblinking camera lens is a much different story than the one relayed back to us from the parties involved.  Sometimes, one side has more weight and validity than the other.  But, hardly ever is the "remembered" version the same as what really happened.  Editing also comes in to play.  I propose that this is not just a reality TV phenomenon, but a real life one.

Next time you have a client who is adamant about telling you what you did wrong and how you have totally messed everything up, step back, take a breath, truly digest the information they have provided and think before you respond.  There may be some truth in there somewhere.  By looking at the situation with a rational head instead of a defensive one, you can assess the situation better and provide a clearer picture for your client.  There may be issues going on in their life that you are not privy to and you have caught them at that one bad moment where they feel the need to explode.  You just happen to be caught in the fallout.  Admittedly, this is not an ideal situation, but it does happen.  Of course, sometimes there are just some people you can't make happy no matter what you do.  But, that's what happens in business and life.

Remember that there are actually three sides to an argument: my side, your side and the truth.  Finding that third side of the coin can help you be a better REALTOR® and a better person.

Great words Heather....the real issue is the 3rd side, the truth, comes from who's perspective.  I love what you're saying, but even if I get to the bottom of the truth, then the client still may not buy it b/c it's not "their truth."  Just face forward and keep moving!

Heather, you are so right.  My truth isn't another's truth; it's just the way we remember it.

Hi Heather - This is a good way to keep your perspective in any situation where things become a bit heated.

Good point, Larry.  You're absolutely right.  I guess the best thing to do is to realize that their "truth" may be different than your "truth" and to not take it personally.

Thanks, Cindy.

It's admittedly hard to do, Judy, but definitely something to think about.

Hi Heather,

there is off course a 4th opinion....... the one from all the outsiders, that had nothing to do with any part of it all and are now chiming in.......;0)

Well, William.  I am learning more and more that it is better to keep your mouth closed and thought to be an idiot than to open it and be proven so.

That's true, Peter & Linda.  :)

Heather....suggested!  I would agree.  The ultimate quest is to find the exact truth!  That can also be the most difficult!

Great points Heather, to remember to be gracious, even if you are not at fault.  I don't think any one ever wins an argument by standing their ground.  You have to give, and above all listen to the other side.  Then only can you discern the truth of the matter!

Hi Heather,

Russel Ray sent me to your blog and I'm glad he did.  There is a lot of truth to what you said.  Especially what you don't know about in their lives.  I am suggesting and reblogging........
