What Really Goes on at My Book Club Meeting

I belong to two book clubs because I love reading books. It is as simple as that.
Book Reading

I'm the fiction novel type, but have been known to read the occasional autobiography, or a sci-fi best seller. For Mother's day, I received Steven Tyler's new book, "Does the Noise In My Head Bother You?" I can't wait to get started.

Every month the book club gets together at one of the member's home and that host is responsible for the book selection, coffee and a munchie. The host also has prepared the reading guide questions (these are downloadable online) or some outline of the discussion.

If this sounds intimidating, it really isn't. We have a lot of fun because our discussions not only center on the book, but also on happenings in the neighborhood.

You see these two book clubs are in separate neighborhoods and populated by the people of that neighborhood.

Do you see where I am going with this?

After the general discussion has ended, I am invariably asked, "So what is going on in the neighborhood?" And they definitely mean the real estate goings on..

Here I have a captive audience that is basically awaiting the pearls of wisdom from my lips. Granted they are not ready to sell now, but someday they will be. I have received a buyer referral already.

Once I determine which ones are really interested in knowing the recent goings on and which ones only have a casual interest, I ask if they would like to receive their neighborhood's market report by email. No one has refused so far. Because real estate is not the primary focus, it is really a soft sell- the kind I love best.

And so I have an additional task that I must perform on Bookclub Mondays. I check the
keyboardmarket changes in the listings, pendings and solds of that neighborhood so that I am as prepared on this question as I am on who was the protagonist of the story. Because both questions always come up.

Yes, I am locked in to these book clubs. I would not trade them for anything. Because where else can you discuss a good book, meet with good friends and know that you are their go-to real estate agent?

Sandi, it's all about the relationships you build. And it sounds like you found the perfect way to build relationships with two of your passions - love for books and love for your trade. (By the way, you have to tell me what you think of Steven Tyler's book - I want to read it, but have so many on my "to read" list)

This is just another avenue available to us.  You get to kill a few birds with the same stone, so to speak.  Discuss the agreed upon book, catch up on the goings on in the neighborhood, dispense a few pearls of wisdom about real estate and have a pleasant evening with friends to boot... a book club, yeah, what a marvelous idea!

Hi Kelly~ Nice to hear from you. I will definitely let you know how I like it-- Steven Tyler yay!!

Hi Dee~ And the funny thing was that I went into the book club not thinking about real estate-- it just happened.

Sandi, let me say that the noise in my head probably bothers a whole lot of people, LOL. Perhaps I should read the book.

What a great way to meet potential clients!

Hi Sandy,

What a great way to meet with people from your neighborhood and a social way at that.  Should it become more than social and a client or referral all the better.  I had not thought of this before reading your post and it is such a good idea. So did you start the bookclubs or were they already in progress.  I remember years ago a client of mine in another industry was in a bookclub and they felt it was very exclusive.  If you started it, did you just knock on your neighbors doors and ask if this would be something they would be interested in?  Very interesting and challenging at the same time.

For in a republic, who is the Country ? Is it the Government which is for the moemnt in the saddle? Why, the Government is merely a servant- merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them. Who, then, is the Country ? Is it the newspaper? is it the pulpit? Is it the school superintendent? Why, these are mere parts of the country, not the whole of it; they have not command, they have only their little share in the command. They are but one in a thousand; it is in the thousand that command is lodged; they must determine what is right and what is wrong; they must decide who is a patriot and who isn't.Who are the thousand that is to say, who are the Country ? In a monarchy, the king and his family are the country; in a republic it is the common voice of the people. Each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. And it is a solemn and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catch-phrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide it against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide on way, and that way be the right way accordng to your convictions of the right, you have done your duty by yourself and by your country hold up your head. You have nothing to be ashamed of.- Papers of the Adam Family Written by Mark Twain, living embodiment of Comet Haley
