I found this calculator online that you can use to cut the federal budget. I not only cut things I thought were a total waste, I took a hit too on items that affected me directly. It wasn't that painful and I picked choices I thought I could live with.

I would start with the programs that make people actually go to work instead getting paid to do nothing. and yea some of that foreign aid for staters
Ow! Ow! Ow! Whadayamean we have to reduce the benefits we social security recipients get! Tax someone else, leave me alone.
Of course, you can't reduce defense expenditures or student benefits, or . . . . whatever. And taxes are already too high and you want to add a sales tax?
Doing this exercise makes it obvious why we have a problem. Whenever I hear someone complaining about the deficit I ask her what expenditures she wants to cut -- and it suddenly gets real quiet.
