Can you handle rejection?

By
Home Stager

I get many calls & emails from people who are thinking about becoming a Stager or have just completed a course. They want information or for me to hire them.

It takes me back 6 years to when I finished my course with Staged Homes and became an Accredited Staging Professional. I was just like these people, full of enthusiasm and struggling to establish myself in the industry. At that time Staging was not that common in my area.

I didn't really have any idea of how hard it was to get started or how long it would take to get my business off the ground.

I'm not writing this to discourage anyone, but rather to make you aware. Building your business doesn't happen over night. It takes time and effort.

You try to get known by :

  •  making presentations at Realty offices
  • creating a web site
  • creating a blog as I have here on Active Rain
  • sending out e-mails
  • sending out a news letter
  • doing cold calls
  • introducing yourself at open houses
  • dropping off literature at Realty offices if they allow it
  • getting a booth at Realty shows
  • putting out fliers in neighborhoods
  • advertising in Real Estate papers and magazines

Some of these efforts will reward you with a new client. Some will do nothing for you. Once you get those first few clients, word of mouth starts kicking in. I have found that is the best way to get known. Those recommendations are so important.

The key thing to remember is that along the way there will be a lot of rejection. You will go out and knock yourself out doing a presentation or manning your booth at a show and get very little back. You may feel you have really connected with a Realtor at an open house and never hear from them.

Don't be discouraged by the rejections. Keep at it. What you may see as a rejection may pay off down the road. That agent that didn't call may pass your card onto another agent who comes to them for a name. You never know when your efforts are going to pay off.

Establishing a Staging business takes time and money. I usually say 'don't quit your day job' because you probably won't be able to support yourself at first. The great thing about Staging is you can do it evenings and weekends at first. You can take vacation days off from your 'day job' to make presentations at Realty offices.

Once you get established, you will have a very rewarding job that you love to go to every day.

Wow Janice - I couldn't have summed it up better! You try lots of different things, some work and most don't........except the good old fashion referrals. Most, if not all my business comes from a job (usually a referral) who refers me to someone else. If you can work with one good Realtor, and do a great job, you will get more business from other Realtors in that office - that has been my experience. Oh, and rejection - learn to get over it because it comes with the territory! Great post for new stagers or anyone thinking of getting into staging. I'm suggesting!

Janice- You are so right on this!  You have to be willing to be CEO, CFO , CMO, CIO and be willing to keep plugging away at it every day.  If you think that by saying "Hello world I'm a Stager" will get your phone ringing you need to read your post.

Thanks Kristine! I'm glad you agree.

Thanks Kathy! Yes, we wear many hats ;). You are right about plugging away every day. That's one of the things they stressed in my course LOL. Do something for your business every day!

Hi Janice, great topic. I wouldn't say it is rejection, it is more like "no action", nobody will say NO to you, they will say I'll keep you in mind". You like exist for yourself but business will not come to you if you will be just sitting and waiting for the phone to ring. You are so right, do something every day.

Anna, 'I'll keep you in mind ' and then never calling is rejection to me LOL. I had a great chat with a major Realtor and felt we really connected. He asked for my card etc. I followed up with some info. for him. Nothing. Then I saw him start advertising 'free staging consult'. Nothing. I guess some other lucky Stager has him for a client now ... sigh ... rejection ;).

I think our profession is as misunderstood by "stager hopefuls" as it is by sellers.  They have no idea just how hard it is to get established.  I got a facebook message last week from a woman I went to highschool with.  She saw an ad for certification and wanted to know "exactly what is staging anyways, can you make good money?  I'm thinking of making a career change."  Oh boy....don't quit your day job!

My sentiments exactly Sharon! You don't just take a course and start making money right away.

Janice--you certainly covered this 100%.  If anyone thinks any business is easy to establish and expand they have to be nuts.  And in this business every market is different so there are no canned, fool-proof methods.  However, persistence and focusing on a goal have always worked for me.  Nice post.

Janice ~ I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that trends are changing!  Homeowners are the ones who are contacting home stagers more and more.  Realtors who don't use staging as a marketing tool are operating in the Dark Ages -- if they don't offer this option to their sellers, they'll likely lose out to an agent who does.  Most of my business is coming from homeowners who find me online. Blogging helps them see me!

Maureen, I agree that things have changed for the better in my 6yrs of staging. More and more Realtors are advertising staging consults as part of their package. Blogging on AR definitely gets us Google juice so that sellers find us easier. You still have to get out there and ask for business either by meeting people in the industry or raising your Internet presence. You can't just sit and wait for the phone to ring.
