Craig’s Commute and Photo Shoot

By
Education & Training with Tech Training for You!

Have you seen the movie Trains, Planes, and Automobiles? Well that’s kind of like the theme of my daily commute... only mine is buses, boats, and trains! I live on Staten Island and work in Manhattan. I have a 90 minute trip each way to and from work. The Staten Island Ferry is a 25 minute trip across the NY Harbor. From there I catch the uptown 1 Train to 23rd Street.
The ferry trip is very interesting and sometimes us commuters take it for granted. It is quite an interesting trip past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Governors Island. Lower Manhattan gets closer you can see interesting viewpoints up both the Hudson River and the East River. The Freedom Tower is quickly rising in the skyline at the rebuilt World Trade Center and I have a great view of this both from the ferry trip as well as my office up on 26th Street.
Today I took my Canon along for the ride. It takes so much nicer photos than my phone does, it is a striking contrast and refreshing to have my regular camera. I love photography and it is fun to have days where you get to really shoot a nice series of shots!
I have had a Flickr account for a while but haven’t done much with it. I see more and more serious photography people posting their work there... I thought I’d give it another chance. I’m glad I did, I’m finding I like it! It gives you a nice photo newsfeed of what all your contacts have recently posted. You can go visit and make comments and generally be inspired by others terrific shots. I’m finding more and more AR photogs over there and have added them as contacts on that site so I can see their work in my feed are you there too?
Here is my photoshoot for Tue May 10, 2011 - Craig’s Commute (23 photos) - hope you enjoy!

Craig - Is there much difference between storing at Flickr vs Picasa, or other sites?  Could you posts something about the differences and benefits? Although I hate to hear the answer.  Every time I read one of your posts, it creates a lot of work for me ;)

Michele - yeah, at least there's a "good news" part of the long commute, eh?

Sally - it is an interesting question. Which is your preference?
Here's my take on it at the moment. I love Google Picasa, and picasa web is terrific for sharing photos. The interface is clean and intuitive. Downloading whole albums is easy. Full screen slideshows work great. I give it an A!
Flickr on the other hand, I find the interface a little less intuitive but it is still quite good, and the more I use it, the more I see features that I didn't know about before (e.g. click on photo to go to large slideshow view mode).
Part of my answer depends on what your goal is. Flickr has attracted the social element of photos and has built an audience (follow the photo streams of your contacts and comment on them). Picasa has social elements also, but like Google Buzz being a great interface it just didn't attract the audience. So if you want the social interaction, I'm thinking Flickr. If you want a great place just to host photos and share them so others can view them, i'm thinking Picasa.
Picasa has the advantage of unbeatable price also for $5 for a whole YEAR you get 20GB of storage space!!!

Craig: Wow, nothing like commuting through history and one of the most famous areas in the world every day. Love your photos. I too love getting my Fuji camera out more often lately and I'm really looking forward to more sunshine and getting out and about the Puget Sound area for photo opportunities...

I need to get back to Flickr more... lately my experiment is with Picasa so I've spent a lot of my time there the past several months. I agree, Flickr has some really great features and I like the updates. I belong to a couple of groups there and am truly in awe at some of the work I see. Both sites are great and each has its own personality. Great comments to Sally, and very true...

Craig,

WOW. All I have driving to work is concrete and a few palm trees. Oh yeah, I drive on US1 which gives me a great view of the Intercoastal waterway. And yes I have noticed the ospreys have hatched their babies on top of the electric poles. The flowers are in bloom and in my own neighborhood the children are enjoying a morning at play.

Hmm maybe I better start taking my camera along too.

Love the photos since I've never been to NY and would love to see those sights, but I cannot imagine a 90 min commute no matter where I lived.  Also, I love your blog, it is the one I go to for help first.

Craig, if you are going to have to commute, it is a double bonus to have such a beautiful one, you commute pictures on the way to work look like some families vacation photos, something to keep in mind if you ever find yourself thinking, oh man, not this commute again.
