Relocating to Baton Rouge? How to Find a GREAT Moving Company!

Are you relocating to Baton Rouge? Most people who are relocating consider it to be a massive headache. Personally, I think moving is fun just as long as it goes over smooth. I have moved a handful of times throughout the years and while the majority of my moves were easy there were two that were total nightmares. Oh yes, it’s a moving experience I will never forget. Three years ago, my current landlord decided that he wanted to sale the property and I made the big decision to buy. While I diligently sought out the perfect property, I didn’t do the same when seeking out a moving company. I was in such a rush to get out of the home so the landlord could take over that I basically picked the first company that I thought I could afford. You would think I would have learned my lesson since this same incident happened several years before.

The moving company, as always, showed up in no time. Of course, they were nice in the beginning and started to load up all of my belongings. Personally, I would have thought that it would have taken more than two people due to the size of some of my furniture but they somehow managed to get everything in the truth without getting a hernia…I think. I was pretty nervous about how they were treating my furniture because they were not

professionally loading it up. I’m not picky about that sort of thing but it’s just that I had antique pieces that were from my mother and grandparents. All of the furniture just seemed to be stuffed in the back of their truck with no padding so naturally after it was all said and done, there were scratches here and there.

After everything finally got to the new house, this is when the drama ensued. When I went to pay them, they quoted me a different price than the initial one. I was a kind of stunned and I didn’t have a bank card and of course, the banks were closed. I remained calm while trying to negotiate back to the original price rather than pay the new baffling price. They were not budging. I offered to write the company a check for the additional but there would be none of that. I’m assuming they were spiking the price to pocket the rest and if I wrote a check to the company, this would prevent them from making the extra dough.

They then proceeded to tell me that they were basically holding my belongings for ransom and that they were about to get back in the truck and take it to New Orleans. The move had gone great up until this point and since they refused to take my check, I eventually started to cry like a two-year-old. I couldn’t get in touch with friends or family at the moment, so I just knew that they were going to haul off with my things. I finally got in touch with an old friend who came over to bail me out. He paid the $600 which initially was $350. Honestly, I really didn’t have that much stuff to move because I had given away most of my furniture because I had bought some new stuff that was coming later on that week.

So, what’s the moral of the story? It’s imperative that you check with the Baton Rouge Better Business Bureau before you hire a moving company. After the ordeal was over, I did make it to the BBB website and this moving company actually worked under 15 different names and had one bad report after another. I assume they had to change names to sucker more people in. The Baton Rouge Better Business Bureau is a great way to find out what moving company will be best for your move. You can see what their rating is and if there are any open complaints on them or if there have been any complaints at all. If you want to save yourself the massive headache, scratches and dents and a wad of cash, research before you hire and be sure to check for hidden fees associated with the move.
