Migration is Not Always Caused by a Change in Season

Black and White WarblerThis is not a scientific study on birds, but just a fun observation made by me.  Today I had some unusual birds visit my yard in a year that has brought many different sightings.  But today's birds were at least explainable.  The neighbor behind me started an extensive renovation on his home this morning (bright and early), so we heard all kinds of banging and beeping.  Birds are not fond of strange noises.  It seems that the birds that hang out in my neighbor's yard decided to come to mine today (he is also an avid birder).

The first bird that caught my notice was the Eastern Bluebird.  This is an occasional visitor to my yard, but today he was here quite a while, even taking a swim in my in-ground bird bath.  While watching the bluebird, another bird caught my eye--it appeared to be a Black and White Warbler (at least that's the best I can do from later checking Sibley's which I photographed for this post as I will never get a photo of the real thing).

So it is not always the changing seasons that cause birds to move around--sometimes they are just looking for a safe haven from the hustle and bustle!

I'll need to look at our bird identification book for the eastern bluebird.  Like Rob, I need to pay closer attention to the visiting birds.  The mourning doves are the ones I hear every morning.

 Blooming for you!

I get awakened by Meadowlarks at about 5 in the morning, they do a bit more singing than pounding.

Hi Wanda - I was just looking through Sibleys and noticed the Meadowlarks.  I really miss them from when we lived in Colorado.

Hi Chris,

When the hawks show up in our yard, the little birdies clear out too. :)

Hi Lisa - When the hawks show up in our yard, everyone freezes.  : )

Hi Toni - My vantage point was a little unusual.  I was behind shrubs that I would never normall be able to see into.  Guess I will have to start birding from different positions!

Chris--I enjoy your bird posts almost as much as birding in my own yard.  Thankfully my husband does all he can to attract as many different species as possible.  It is a nice break in the day, isn't it?

Chris,

From my observations so far, spring comes with lucky charms for you after that long, hard winter. Your patience was tested; you endured the season of winter with courage. Now your rewards are many...

Spring is great! Spring is good! God only knows how much people like you from those cold weather climates deserve to have all the joys that life can give. Birds, butterflies, plants and animals - all these good things I wish for you!

Great post and story too!

Hi Chris, good point about the noise and commotion chasing away birds.  Never thought of that.

Chris:

Clever post.  Lucky for you that your neighbors are remodeling.  You'll have more birds to admire and photograph.
