No More Electric Bills For Us!

By

Our solar panels are working now almost to their full capacity!

Today, we got our first electric bill that was a credit of $270 plus.  That means that we probably produced around $400 worth of electricity, last month.  As the days get longer we will be producing even more.

Obviously, we are not calculating the return on investment anymore, since the DC government changed the rules after we bought the system. We were promised $18,000 from an energy fund set up by Pepco and funded with a special user fee.  Toour dismay, the DC Council took the money to pay its bills, though it was not city funds.

I know some blogs were written about the negative side of having solar panels, but I am fixated on the following positive aspects:

1. We will not have to worry about cooling the house while we occupy it.  I was very careful last summer with the air conditioning and I did not enjoy that.

2. When we eventually rent out the house, the tenants would benefit having practically free electricity.  I think a tenant would be more amenable to pay a higher rent.

3. And as utilities keep increasing drastically, a buyer would probably see the value in having a solar system they need not pay for.

Simone, this sounds like a great idea.  It is hard to imagine not only using electricity free of charge, but then getting a credit at the end of the month as well.  Pretty Cool Stuff !

When they see how much they are going to save, getting a higher rent for that property will not be a problem.

Karen, it is a great idea, but the price of solar panels or other alternative energy solutions need to come down to make it affordable to more home owners.

Lorinda, as utility costs keep going up, the system will save whoever lives in the house even more.

Lisa, just learned that the Dupont company is working on roof shingles that produce electricity.  Hopefully they will be more productive than present product.
