Shots Fired

People move for so many varied reasons. Change of job, new addition to the family, less family. As a Connecticut home inspector I'm there to help them with the first part of their move.

Recently I had a young couple whose motivation for moving would seem to be a growing family. The home they were purchasing was on a quiet back street next to a school. The home was in need of plenty of work, which this couple seemed more than willing to take on.

Bullet in the roofAs usual I inspected the exterior first, getting up on the roof. As I was finishing up heading back to the ladder something caught my eye in the roof. It was small, round and similar in color to the shingles. I leaned down close and said to my self,

"No way"!

It was a bullet.

Now I have found my share of strange things during home inspections, but this was a bit unsettling.

The bullet hadn't penetrated the shingles to deep, which makes me wonder how it got there. It was obviously not fired directly at the roof. If it had been fired into the air, I would think that falling a great distance would have caused it to penetrate much further. None the less it was there.Bullet pulled from shingles

I showed my souvenir to my clients who were a bit unsettled by the bullet as I had been, but seem to shrug it off quickly.

After inspecting the entire home the bullet looked to be the least worrisome thing I found that day.

Someone is shooting high. Or in the air to celebrate like you see on the news from other sides of the planet. They go up, but they have to come down. Like hail, the killing kind. Thanks for taking the time to shoot the shot and post the post.

James, Probably some yahoo shooting into the air some distance away. not the kind of thing you want to START an inspection with.

You never know what will be found during a home inspection.  The one thing we do know is that the buyers will always be better informed when they have a professional home inspection as part of the home purchase process.

 Blooming for you!

Hi Jim,

I guess it better to find bullets imbedded in the roof rather than inside the house, but if I was you, check your insurance...;)

JQ, if the bullet was the least of it, I'd hate to be buying that place! Did they?

Jim that must be what we mean when we say the roof is "shot."  Also, I do think that a bullet falling at terminal velocity probably would only penetrate about that far.

I agree with Peg and Andrea - if that was the LEAST worrisome thing... Yikes! I'm glad you told the couple though - something they should know for sure. Did they keep the bullet as a souviner?

Andrew, That's what it looks like happened.

Peter, It made wonder about being on the roof.

Roy, How true. It's all about the information.

Andrea, Oh yes, this house had many, many problems.

Peter & Linda, I guess I should call my insurance agent to check my coverage :)

Peg, Not sure, but I can't see them doing so.

Charlie That was my line of thinking, but I would think it would penetrate deeper.

Don, Up was all I could figure as I was quickly heading off the roof :)

Robert, I wasn't aware that homes could have body armor.

George, LOL. The only shots I've received are of the verbal variety.

Mykel, I don't think they did.

Nutsy, Yes come on out, we could have a great time. I will plan a bbq.

Robert, And the brain the size of a peanut.

Jim, Some neighbors that I inspect in, you would think I would find whole clips and the brass to go along with it.  Don't think I've ever found a spent bullet.  I have dug out a few that weren't spent though.

Clearly someone in reasonable close proximity with a relatively open line of fire to the house has fired the rifle or pistol in the direction of, not necessarily at, the house and that carried the bullet to the top of that house, where it imbeded the roof tile but not too deeply, where you found it.

Jack, I know what you mean about some neighborhoods. This is a first for me, and hopefully the last.

Dagny, I prefer my amazing things to be potentially less lethal :)

Lenn, Yep. It looked like a 9mm pistol round.

Nutsy, The truth hurts.

Unusual that a bullet wouldn't penetrate further than that.  But stranger things have happened.  Maybe Oswald shot it from Dallas and it is the other "magic" bullet.
