Are You Looking For Pioneers?

Today for some unexpected reason I stopped here to look for pioneers. It was another typical beyond chaotic day in the trenches of Santa Fe real estate where things appear to either go right or wrong all at the same time. When those events seem to collide, I head for the road to experience the land and all the reasons why I love this magical place. About six miles from the Historic Plaza on the Historic Santa Fe Trail my imagination kicked into gear when I caught the mountain looking at me.

How could I race past this place? After all, this was where pioneers and traders traveled to finish dreams and find riches of opportunity in the early eighteen hundreds. They moved in wagons without Facebook or an ipad or twitter for weeks along a 900 mile trail from Missouri. Their ability to dream erased their uncertainity. I just had to stop and soak in some of their dreams and experience the joy of looking for new things. I found this image and got gooseflesh remembering how their journey made mine possible.

I hope this inspires you to stop and dream once a day.

Emily, As my husband would say "the west is the best"!!  Both of us came from relatives who came to the west in wagon trains.

The Santa Fe Trail went right through Independence, Missouri, starting in Franklin Missouri.

Independence was also one of the historic "jumping off points" for the Oregon and California Trails.

I remember this because, as a high school student, we lived in Independence, only about two blocks from the historic old town square, where there were “Monuments” to mark the trails.

And, no, we were not involved in any of the wagon trains!

Emily,

What a lovely thought and a lovely way of expressing.  I often do that type of thinking on a long driving trip imagining how the landscape must have looked before the freeways and buildings.  Yes, and all those people who made our journey possible...Thanks for the reminder. A

Emily - Looking at your wonderful photo I am struck by how hardy those pioneers had to be to travel for weeks by wagon through such rough  country.

We sure do have it easy compared to our ancestors, don't we?  It's nice to get out in the country and reconnect with nature and think about those things.

Emily, Terrain without billboards and wires and structures frees the mind to wonder of earlier times.  What a hard journey for so many seeking a better life out west.  Yes it is so much easier today.

Your photo is much like the terrain in the movie "Unforgiven" which I happened to see again on public TV this weekend, a Clint Eastwood's film.  A movie that captured a lot of the harshness of an earlier time in the rough terrain of our early country.
