Who Hates Lovebugs?

No, we're not talking Disney's Lovebug.
Me, that's who and whole lot of other people too.
It's May in Florida when the temperature is moderate.
But there's something else in the air that's sticky and it isn't the humidity.
All you have to do to gain the Lovebug experience is motor on I-75 in Florida and before you can say OMG, you'll be seeing those pesky critters going SPLAT all over your windshield!
Their fleshy bodies flatten-out when they SPLAT and after a short while you're driving down the ole super-slab at 80 MPH blindfolded!
(Come to think of it, what is the difference between this and texting at 80 MPH, eh?)
Lovebugs can't be that bad, right?

OK, OK, what the heck are they and why do they call them Lovebugs?
Well, Wikipedia says, "The lovebug, Plecia nearctica, is a member of the family of march flies. It is also known as the honeymoon fly, kissingbug or double-headedbug. The adult is a small, flying insect common to parts of Central America and the southeastern United States, especially along the Gulf Coast. During and after mating, adult pairs remain coupled, even in flight, for up to several days."
Like, how bad can they be?
Here's some photographic evidence of Plecia nearcita!

Fortunately, our hate for the little Lovebugs goes away quickly as their life span is brief.
Unfortunately, that leaves we Florida residents driving defensively when Grammy takes the wheel!
