Speechless Sunday - At The Aberfoyle Mill

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc., Brokerage

I enjoy visiting and photographing historic old mills in Ontario.  On my way home from a meeting in Toronto last week I decided to stop by the Aberfoyle Mill near Guelph, Ontario.  This old mill is now a well known restaurant and although I didn't have time to eat, I took a stroll around the property and snapped a few photos.

The Aberfoyle Mill was built approximately 1859

There was a large pond with gazebo and this waterfall right beside the Mill.  It was a dull, drizzly day but this would be a beautiful spot to sit and relax after a meal at the Mill.

Now that I've had a chance to stop and explore the exterior of the Mill, I'm looking forward to returning for a meal and a view of the interior.

This sign was on the side of the building.  Obviously someone has a sense of humor.  I must admit I've never seen this sign before.

It is so nice to see that many of these old mills have either been restored for all to enjoy or have been reincarnated as restaurants, shops, museums or libraries.

Hi Jenny... I love your photos.  And BTW, I have actually been to Guelph (although I did not eat at The Aberfoyle Mill).

Very nice that you've captured the photos of this old Mill. I'm glad it is in use, and was not torn down like so many others of that era.

Are there a lot of Greeks in the area?  Or is the sign just Greek to us?

It's wonderful whan old buildings like that have been well cared for and are still being used. It gives us a tangible link to the past. As for the Greek parking only sign, I've never seen that before.

Hi Steve, you've been to Guelph???  Wow maybe that's why they call it the Royal City lol.  Next time you come to Ontario we definitely have to meet up.

Thanks Stacey, wish it had been a sunnier day but those seem to be few and far between this spring.  Have a great week.

Alison, I agree with you.  It's such a shame when we lose integral parts of our history.

Tony, yes a very unusual sign indeed.  Must be a story there somewhere.

John lol.  Are you kidding?  Kotulak is hard enough to spell.  But then my maiden name Akins wasn't much better.  People always wanted to add a T or an E in it.

Marc, maybe that's where someone swiped it from lol.

Jim, nice to see you!!  Yes I think it is just all Greek to us.  I don't think Guelph or Aberfoyle have a large Greek population.

Hi Rob, you will have to get out there with your camera and go on a road trip lol.  Never know what you may find out on those country roads and small villages.

Malcolm, Ya, I'm stumped about the sign too.  When I see these old buildings I can just picture someone painting them.  I have no talent or patience for that so the camera lens just does the work for me.

Very cool.  I love it when someone turns an old building into a restaurant or unique mall.  It really makes an awesome setting.  We have an old train station in Battle Creek that is not a restaurant.

Jenny - Love the Aberfoyle Mill!! ..... I am sure it has changed hands several times since we ate there ..... it was our favorite dinning spot when my sister lived in Guelph many years ago ..... the food was fabulous back then and likely still is ..... let us know if the water is still running through the mill when you eat there
