I don't like the color of that wall!

Honestly, when I am showing homes to prospective buyers and the first thing out of their mouth is "I don't like the color of that wall" I want to scream!  Of all things to find wrong with a potential home purchase; the color of ANY wall is not one of them. What about the placement of the wall, or the size of the wall, or what is hiding behind that wall? What about how many doors are on that wall, or windows and is that wall a support wall or can it be removed?

When I watch House Hunters on HGTV and hear the client's repeating over and over again; I don't like the color of that wall; I want to throw a paintbrush through the TV! Remember, a can of paint is cheap and the amount of time to change the color of a wall can be measured in hours, not months!

I am surprised when someone can't see past a color and view the potential of a room, or an entire living space.  I realize that not every buyer is Bob Villa, but take the time to stand in a room and picture just how "you" would use it, or what you might do structurally different with it. Look at the light in the room and the flooring.  Look at how the room flows with the rest of the floorplan and are walls a barrier to a more open lifestyle?  All of a sudden the color of the "wall" isn't so important.

I know a lot of Agents that will not list a home until it has been completely neutralized in color, resembling an old Hospital or a Dairy Queen.  I understand that not everyone has "vision" and for that reason I carry swatches of the top 30 home colors used by many decorators.  When an objection is voiced, I simply "whip" out the rolodex of paint chips and suddenly the entire conversation has changed!

It can take a lot of imagination to look past even the little stuff. This is why staging has grown to the business it is. Future buyers can't look past the clutter either, and clutter (unlike wall color) won't even come with the house!

I agree with Torgie, it seems like buyers these days are looking through a fine lens and cannot envision the big picture.

Once at an open house there were prospective buyers who commented they didn't like the furniture and decor. They didn't appreciate my remark that it was not included with the sale and walked out.

I guess most people can't see the forest for the trees which is why I actually have a job! :) Your post proves the point that most people lack vision. Great way to solve the problem and help your buyers imagine what can be.
