Fish without a license in Minnesota

By
Industry Observer

The weekend of June 10-12 is designated as Take-A-Kid-Fishing weekend.  As long as you're accompanied by someone age 15 or under, no license is needed on those three days.  This is an annual program that is an opportunity for folks who are not already hooked on fishing to introduce themselves and their kids to the sport.

There are loads of places in Minnesota to fish, and many opportunities to fish without a boat and without burning hardly any gas to get there.  In Apple Valley, there are four lakes with public shore fishing or pier access.  Lakes Keller, Farquar, Alimagnet, and Lac Lavon are all easily accessible for shore fishing.  Also, the Minnesota DNR lists three dozen  Dakota County locations where you can catch fish without putting an oar in the water.  Mark the second weekend in June on your calendar and take advantage of an inexpensive and enjoyable outing with your kids.

Mike - that is a great event. We have the same event here as well but since we aren't close to any lakes, the city does the event at a big man made pond. It is a great way to spend time outside with the kids.

Good morning Mike, an excellent event.  California would do well to consider the program.  There are many positive aspects to it.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Mike, come on up!  Just go to I35 and turn right, you'll be here in one long day!  Be sure to bring a kid.

Dan,  my guess is that this annual event probably generates lots of tackle and bait sales, and probably a few license sales as a result.  It's not easy to take a kid fishing just once, and the following week, you have to buy a license.  The proximity to fishing lakes gives MN the edge over CA in a casual fishing promotion.  There aren't many people in MN who would have to travel more than ten minutes to get a line wet.

EJ....my kids would be all over this.  We're heading up to Boundary Waters in June.  The older two boys and me.  It should be a lot of fun!

How fun! A great way to introduce fishing to children and rekindle the old fisherman in us!

Larry, June should be great in the BWCA, snow will probably be gone by then :)

Joni,  It's an excellent program that probably introduces as many adults as children to the sport.  Put a kid in the car and come on up in June (see driving directions from Texas above).  Don't forget to stop at the Mall of America where, like the rest of MN, ther is no sales tax on clothing.
