It's not too late to participate in the "West Hartford Wonder" - a trivia contest "celebrating" your knowledge of West Hartford in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Celebrate! West Hartford! Each day, a new trivia question is posted on Celebrate! West Hartford. The contest ends on Thursday, May 26. Everyone is invited to participate and prizes will be awarded! Some answers you will know right off the top of your head - others you may have to research a bit - and a few others might require you to visit a site in town. Here are a sampling of a few of the archived daily questions:
1. Honor where honor is due... West Hartford's newest middle school was named to honor this African American man - renowned for his extensive knowledge of agriculture - who lived part of his life as a slave. What w as his name and where is his grave?
2. You won't find parsley, sage, rosemary or thyme at this rustic recreational area, but you will find hundreds of youngsters there each May, vying to catch the "Granddaddy" trout.
3. Honorable mention... This eighteenth century Connecticut Valley manor house - still standing - was where three British officers captured during the American Revolution were sentenced to remain, unguarded, "on their honor." What historic house is this?
4. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, but they should water theirVisit the greenhouse at Westmoor Park and list three varieties of plants orplants!flowers thriving there.
5. He didn't invent the Internet, but ... As early as 1810, West Hartford's premiere wordsmith knew this global shift would be a "heated topic." What was the environmental issue, and what did Noah Webster publish to bring it to public attention?
6. Got cash? Victor Manuel Gerena has been on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list since 1984, following his heist of approximately $7 million in West Hartford. From what company (known for guarding currency!) did this brazen thief steal this sixty-foot replica of a sperm whale (Connecticut's official state Shiver me timbers! animal) has had thousands of kids in his belly, but he's never digested a one! What is his name and where in town is he "beached?"
8. What title have Nan Glass (former West Hartford mayor), Denis Lorenz (former library director), Bob Donahue (former Sedgwick Middle School principal), and Angelo Faenza (Park Road Association leader), each held - during some portion of the last twenty-five years?
9. A picture's worth a thousand words...What prominent Hartford artist painted the murals gracing the walls of the Town Council office - depicting the History of Man, and the walls on the first floor of the Charter Oak International Academy - depicting the children's poem, "Wynken, Blynken and Nod"?
10. Some like it hot, some like it cold. Put a feather in your cap if you know what frozen place in West Hartford "Blade" the mascot calls home.
The contest bega on Monday, May 2, 2011 and ends Thursday, May 26, 2011. On each consecutive day, a new trivia question is posted on West Hartford Life and Celebrate! West Hartford, and will be on view at the Customer Service Desk in the Town Hall lobby. The daily question also will scroll on West Hartford Community Television WHC-TV (Comcast channel 96) and (AT&T channel 99.) Archived questions will be available on www.MyWestHartfordLIFE.com and www.CelebrateWestHartford.com, and at the Customer Service Desk in the Town Hall lobby.

Those 25 winners will receive a Celebrate West Hartford 25th anniversary T-shirt. Three top winners will be chosen at random from those 25 winners.
