Oleanders look great but there is something you should know...before you put them in your backyard.

oleandrs

My friend is building a pool and she wanted to put the same flowers that her neighbors had to fill the space in the corners of her back yard. It turned out to be Oleanders. They are beautiful and very popular here in TEXAS but did you know that they are poisonous?

There is a legend that soldiers of Alexander The Great died overnight after they cooked meat on oleander sticks over campfire. So if you have pets or small children you should think twice.

I suggested a Peach tree instead. It blooms with beautiful flowers in spring and gives you nice peaches that will be fun for kids to watch them grow.

Anna, there are so many plants that you have to be careful with. They may be beautiful but dangerous as well.

I had no idea Anna!  And they are so pretty.  Good thing you knew they were poisenous.  Great option with the peach tree!

Good point Anna. Interestingly enough - my dog stays away from them. It makes me wonder if they don't already instinctively know that its poisonous....

I had no idea! I don't know much about plants or trees but we have been thinking about some landscaping for the summer and it never occurred to me to ask about this. Thanks for the tip!

Roger, it was a surprise for me 5 years ago when I did my landscaping.

Shannon, I am glad I could help.

Anna, I love the crepe myrtles in my yard more than I did the oleanders.  As a matter of fact I took all the oleanders out and kept the crepe myrtles as they were battling for space.

Hi Anna,

Thanks for the great information...  I had no idea either.  I too like your suggestion about the Peach Tree... and it would be fun for the family to have fresh peaches when they are in season.  Great tip Anna!

Anna- I'm all for the peach tree.  We used to have an orange and grapefruit tree in the back yard of one of our houses here in Florida.
