What About the Kids? Suggestions for Making Kids Part of the Home Buying Process

Real Estate Agent with Exit Pro Realty

What about the kids?

The home buying process can be a stressful time for anyone, but it can be an especially stressful time for children. As a parent, you have the ability to lessen your children’s stress and have some fun with home shopping by including your kids in the process. Here are some suggestions to make the process easier on your kids:

1. Attend any neighborhood/community gatherings to get a feel for the people who you may soon call neighbors.

2. Window shop the city you may soon work in and may move to.

a. Is this potential home close to work, school, shopping?

b. Are there any activities nearby for your kids? Look for parks, youth centers, hiking trails, malls, movie theatres, bowling alleys, museums, and lakes.

3. Involve the kids in the home shopping process.

After you have narrowed your choices down to a select few, let your children tour the homes. They will feel a part of the decision making process and have some fun too. Let your brood talk to you about the pros and cons they see in each home. They might see something in the home (good or bad) that you don’t.

4. Listen

Sit down with your kids and listen to their concerns about relocation and the homes you are looking at. Listening to their concerns will help you bond with your children, and help ease any worries or fears about losing friends, losing schools, and losing connections they cherish. You can then calm any fears and answer any questions they may have about the situation

. 5. Emphasize the positives

Kids often see moving to a new home as a loss of their whole way of life. Here is your opportunity as a parent to show them how this move will be a new adventure. Talk with them about the joys of meeting new people. Talk with them about all the possibilities that a new room, a new yard, a new house, a new neighborhood and a new city can bring. Show them all the great places in the town. Help them meet the neighbors. In the end, the home buying process isn’t just about the property; the process is about people and their needs. As your real estate professional, we want the home buying and moving process to be an enjoyable and memorable time in your family’s life. Come start the process with us today.

Great idea.  The children have to live there too so they should be able to have some feedback in what they live in.
