House Styles - Staten Island

Such a small borough but style-wise, Staten Island provides a wide variety of home types. Determining your favorite is a good first step in your search for a new house.

The Ranch

A one-story house with a low pitched roof, the classic Ranch ranges from simple to a detailed facade. The basic style can have many incarnations, from homes built on a concrete slab (a hi-ranch), to ones with attached garages or basements.

The versatile ranch style fits just about any size or taste requirements.

The Cape Cod

Just a one or one and a half stories, the Capes are evolved from English and Irish cottages. They feature a steep roof and windows flanking the center framed front door.

Capes are terrific starter homes and ideal for downsizing.

The Split Level

This multi-level home features an attached garage and a basement under the living area. There's the standard, tri-level (rooms built over the living level) and bi-level (a two story build on a slab). These homes are extremely popular and fill the more suburban areas since they are generally not suited for narrow lots.

The Victorian

Commonly built in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Victorians feature elaborate decorative woodwork, asymmetrical designs, porches and many architectural details. Fanciful and lovely, these wonderful homes are prominant in many Staten Island neighborhoods.

The Queen Annes features towers and the French Provincial version has a more steeply pitched roof.

Tudor Staten Island

The Tudor

Born of inspiration from medieval buildings, the Tudor homes are a combination of brick or stone and decorative timber accents. These distinctive houses feature multi-paned casement windows and an Old World charm.

The Tudor can range from cottage sized homes to large mansions; the style lends itself to many landscapes and locations.
