The Friendswood mushroom tower is coming down...but not for good!

As I drove out of the neighborhood today, I noticed that the water tower behind Friendswood High School is being dismantled. That particular water tower has always reminded me of a big mushroom - not the most sightly structure in the Friendswood area.

Friendswood Water Tower

I wondered if it was coming down for good, so I checked with the city projects department and got the scoop on the fate of the mushroom tower.

It turns out, the tower is coming down, but it will be replaced with a newer, better version similar to the water tower on FM 528 close to Alvin. The city actually has a water well under the tower that serves as a back-up source of water if and when Friendswood cannot purchase their water from the City of Houston.  So the water tower is necessary, but it just needs to be updated.

Residents living near the mushroom tower will probably be happy to hear that it is being replaced with a more contemporary structure!

Friendswood just would not be the same without its mushroom tower!

I like the mushroom tower. The new one on FM 528 is okay...but all the new ones look a like. I like Luling water towers. They look like big ole water melons!

Rose - I like these towers!  Especially when they have City art on them.

Hi, Rose. Some water towers become landmarks that are pleasant to look at. We have one just like this mushroom, and some that are more landscape friendly. Maybe I can post those pictures... an idea for today! :)

I'd like to watch that dismantling.  Looks like some major surgery.  Maybe they could paint the newv one with a blue sky scene complete with billowy clouds and birds and maybe a moon.  A rainbow would be too corny?

Lloyd, That man standing on top of the tower was there almost all day. I watched it off and on just to see how long he would stay up there! A blue sky scene with clouds painted on the water tower would blend in much better than the mushroom tower did!

I erected that tank in 1985, it was a used tank that came from California.
