My 2¢'s Worth...

I have come to the conclusion, that unlike men, all vehicles are not created equal. They have not been bestowed by their creators with certain basic functions. Some have not been equipped with turn signals.

Be it far from me to be a smart a$$, or even for even a moment, give the hint that folks behind the wheel are too busy texting, yakking on the cell, or otherwise preoccupied by being engaged in meaningful conversation with someone else in the vehicle. And it couldn't be that they are too self absorbed, rude, ignorant or inconsiderate of others on the roadway. Why that would be preposterous and downright presumptuous.

So that being said, the only conclusion that I can deduce is that, while some companies talk about superior engineering and the latest gadgets and gizmos, the simple fact is; they goofed. So what now? Do we write our Congressmen to issue a massive recall to retrofit all those millions of vehicles? Heck! They probably own one. And who is going to bear to cost of retraining so the owners can get back into the habit? Oh, my.

Maybe, car manufactures will come up with a way to program our destination in to a central computer and the car will navigate to the predetermined destination. That way, the driver doesn't have to worry about the rules of the road, being courteous, or focus on driving. They can engage in what is really important; texting, yakking on the cell, being engaged in meaningless conversation...

Michael, I know what you mean. I don't know if they teach young drivers to signal without turn signals or not. It is a shame they have not taught courtesy.

With so many of the other drivers and the bikers out there, it is hard to remain courteous.

Oh dear Michael, are you certain it wasn't just some flighty chick from Wisconsin in front of you?  Certainly it couldn't have been,.... As far as the government getting involved, well of course they should!  After all, where would we be had they not bailed out our banks?  ;-).

I just say, technology...certain technologies need to take a rest.  WE do not know how to communicate with each other anymore.  I'm 26 years old, I should be in the "prime time" of loving technology, sometimes I just can not stand it.

Michael - I used to think when a driver was swerving in and out of their lane or driving 5 mph - they were drunk - now it's usually someone on their cell phone oblivious to the road and other drivers. I signed Oprah's campaign to not use my cell while driving - I keep it off until I reach my destination so I won't even be tempted. Deadly texting accidents are now more common than DUI deaths! That's a strong message!

Michael - Sounds like you had a tough drive somewhere today....  I had three drivers cut me off and honk at me while they did it - have anything to do with the crummy weather today?

Michael - You are right, some drivers are careless and don't have concern for other drivers on the road. Thank you for a very good blog.

Hi Michael - People have to take personal responsibility for their actions.  No one makes them act stupid regardless of the technology.

Hi Michael, over the last 5 years it's gotten worse. Every time I think someone was driving drunk, they were on the cell or texting. Very scary times. People do not think.

Sounds like we were driving on the same roads Michael. Turn signals, following too close, and the worse one hugging the merge lane! Yes, some drivers need to wake up and realize they are not the only ones on the road!

Michael ~ This sounds just like Frank, he is forever scolding at people as we drive to a destination. The worst thing is when someone does the "Carolina merge" and almost hits us broadside. People think the middle lane, which is for turning, is another lane for driving. Frank could give you his two cents too on this topic ~

Michael - don't get me started, you know what I think about driving and technology, since I've written about it many time in the past. I do know that the technology is very close to allowing us to use the navigation and cruise control as a auto pilot. We already have cars that can park themselves, cruise controls with radar to stop the car when the car in front of you does, and navigation is better than I am at knowing where to turn.

It can't be hard to put these systems together, and I'll be mercedes or Bmw is working on it now.
