Even though October is the "official" National Fire Safety Month, in these fast-paced times it’s easy to overlook fire safety and precautions in your home so here is a fire safety checklist to help you out:
1. Smoke alarms. Comedian Jim Gaffigan once said that you know you watch too much TV when you replace the battery in the remote with the battery from your smoke alarm. Put fresh batteries in your smoke alarms and test each one to make sure it’s functioning properly. Of course, make sure you have enough for your home (one per story in the hallway or near bedrooms).
2. Matches and lighters. Store all matches and lighters in a safe place out of your children’s reach.
3. Fire extinguishers. Check your home fire extinguishers and make sure 1) they are fully charged and 2) they are not expired. Many fire extinguishers have an “expiration date” telling you when they must be serviced or replaced. One fire extinguisher in the kitchen is a minimum and an extra in the garage is always a good idea.
4. Electrical outlets. Overloaded electrical circuits are the cause of many home fires. Replace any damaged plugs or cords and check electrical outlets to make sure you haven't exceeded their rated load.
5. Home Evacuation Plan. Do you have one? Make sure you have a home evacuation plan for emergencies and periodically review or rehearse the plan to make sure everyone knows it.
