Why common sense is no longer common

As a real estate broker in Boise, Idaho; I have to shake my head sometimes at what I see in the behavior of my clients and in the industry in general these days.  Have you noticed how common sense is no longer common?  When did we hit the tipping point and start regressing as humans?

When I was younger I couldn't figure out why so many old people were grumpy.  I thought the movie "Grumpy Old Men" was funny.  However, next month, I turn 50 and realized that I have already become "grumpy".  I realize now that part of it is because I get fed up with people that either forget or choose not to think before they talk.

Grumpy Old Men The Genius Factory Opposable Thumbs UpIdiocracy

If you want some logical reasons of why having opposable thumbs is not the saving grace of the human race after all, you should read the book "The Genius Factory - The curious history of the Nobel Prize Sperm Bank" by David Plotz. http://www.thegeniusfactory.net/  Here are two reviews from their website:

"An ebullient new contribution to the realm of weird-science nonfiction...perfectly pitched - blithe, smart, skeptical, yet entranced by its subject."
          Janet Maslin, New York Times

"The Genius Factory is a riveting account of a truly bizarre episode in American history--Robert Graham's crusade to save the human race. David Plotz has written a superb book about the quest for genius, and, ultimately, family."
Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Pointand Blink

Don't you wonder why they pass laws like giving tax breaks to people for having children which in and of themselves don't contribute taxable income back into the system typically for about 18 years?  They even reward those on Welfare to have more children instead of fewer kids.  I think maybe it is because someone in our political system took the term "joint session" a little too literally and "passed" these laws with "clouded" judgement.

Don't get me wrong, I love kids and my wife and I have three of them.  Even my 16 year old son just shakes his head at the human race.  When him and I watched the movie "Idiocracy" which is about an average couple today ending up in the future where they appear as geniuses because the human race had degraded so much.

Maybe I am just grumpy and need a vacation?  Dealing with the whole housing crisis, the mortgage meltdown, short sales, etc. is causing me to have my own Meltdown.  The only conclusion I can come up with is. . .

If God was a betting man, he would probably call his stock broker and tell him to pull up his "human account" and "sell short".

Jim - love the post.  I wrote a post in this same regard about a three weeks ago.  I need a vacation as well.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

We even have a national association that really believes it's a good idea to preserve a law that encourages high debt.  If your home is paid for, your tax dollars are subsidizing the next door neighbor who has his equity parked in the driveway or tied to the dock.  I forget things once in a while, and I can't recall if it was Warren or Jimmy Buffet who said that, if we couldn't laugh we would all go insane.  Maybe it was Dylan Thomas, or was it Bob Dylan?  No, I think it was Warren.

@Jason, I will have to find your post and return the favor of reading it.

@EJ, Agreed.  Many laws encourage debt in real estate (1031's are based on equal debt not equity), the push for the Mortgage Interest Deduction is said to help Home Owners but it doesn't help the retired couple on fixed income that paid for their house with their stock funds or paid their home off over the years.

Jim, At least twicew a day I state "There is nothing common about Common Sence.

I agree with your post buy I have a question.

You said "I love kids and my wife and I have three of them".

My question is did you mean 3 kids or 3 wives?

Loved your post and I'm in the "hit 50 but halfway to 60" crowd - surrounded by "grumps" - but I blamed it on the cold long winters we have here and the shortage of sunny days. I have found myself many times wondering "did I really hear that?"  - stumped by what words and statements have been spoken by others. Where did common sense go? Where did wise decisions go?

Carla, you are doing better than me. I have found myself many times wondering "Did I just say that?"

@Scott, Good catch, with all the LDS infuence here in Boise, I better adjust that wording.  When I re-read the post I realized sometimes I shouldn't write them so late at night.

@Carla, When my grandmother was about 80 years old, I told here "Old age is halfway between your present age and 100".  When she turned 100, I told her she could proudly admit she was old.  She made it to 105!

@Scott, I am amazed you listen to yourself.  I talk to myself, but no one ever listens to me, so I figured why should I listen to myself? ;)
