Worms are OK!
Really they are. If you have worms in your soil ~ that is a good thing. It means your soil (don't say dirt) is getting aerated and enhanced by worm poop (only they call it worm castings).
Yeah so, if you buy soil amendments and it says on the package that it contains worm castings ~ well you have worm poop in it.
But why buy soil amendments, when you can make your own and it will be a lot better for your soil and your wallet (no don't put your wallet in)?
Making compost or mulch or worm castings is really easy. You can take it to any degree of intensity, where you toss it in and forget it, or you measure the heat and turn it every day.
So it turns out that the City of Oxnard will be having a free workshop on composting on Saturday, June 4 at 9:30 AM at Wilson Park, 350 N. “C” Street. Participants should enter the park on Palm Drive between “A” and “C” Streets. Oxnard residents are encouraged to bring their own chair.
Robert Medrano will discuss the benefits of “worm castings,” and mulch to enhance the soil. There are many methods and ways to compost, including several dos and don’ts that will make it easy for anyone to start composting.
So many foods scraps and yard trimmings wind up in the landfill where they don’t biodegrade at an appropriate level because the air is stifled by all the garbage being piled on top. Composting reduces the amount of waste we throw away, using it to make valuable soil for gardeners and growers. Reducing the amount of waste has its many benefits, it helps the environment, it saves money, and it reduces space in the landfill.
There will be a drawing for a free compost bin. The contest is open to Oxnard residents only and the winner must be present to win.
Discounted compost and worm bins are also available for $30 each. Residents can call 385-7928 to schedule a pick-up time for bins.
