Red Flag at the Wedge in Newport Beach, CA

By
Real Estate Agent with Sharon Paxson, Realtor® EQTY Forbes Global Properties 01501912

It was Red Flag the past couple of days at the Wedge. There were big waves!  It was not as big as I have seen before, however, I still would not go into the water under those conditions.  The Newport Beach Lifeguards are out in force!!

the Wedge in Newport Beach, CA

It is always evident when the waves are big at the Wedge, as there is lots of traffic looking for parking spots so that they can see the waves, and multiple news vans and loads of spectators!!!!

the Wedge in Newport Beach, CA

The Wedge is famous for it’s large waves. Due to the location and how it faces, the waves can be quite large and depends upon the direction of the swell.

the Wedge in Newport Beach, CA

The Wedge in Newport Beach is for the experience body boarder, or body surfer, or surfer. These are not conditions for anyone with inexperience. The waves can be so big, and the currents so strong that even the strongest swimmers can get into trouble. It can be very treacherous!

I hope you get the opportunity to come and see the waves when the Wedge has big waves! And make sure you heed the Lifeguard advice.

Unless your surfing it would be best to work on your tan on the beach.

Good luck and success.

Hi Sharon, those are beautiful waves and photos.  I don't think I would go near the water on a red flag day.  What are the other colors that the lifeguards fly?

Wonderful photos of an especially gorgeous area, Sharon!  It would be difficult to stay out of the water for me, even on a red flag day!  But I'm not one to buck the lifeguard's advice.

Hi Lou - exactly - or just watch. It is always fun to spectate, but it can be incredibly treacherous however.

Hi Mary - great question and thanks for asking (should have put it in post - or maybe a future post). Lifeguards fly green - mild ocean but possibility of larger waves; yellow - moderate ocean hazards with possible large waves and should be experienced surfer or swimmer; red flag extremely hazardous ocean conditions with the possibility of large powerful waves and strong rip currents.

And they also fly a yellow flag with a black ball in the middle, and that means no surf boards in front of that tower. Safer for swimmers.

HI Myrl - in this particular area of Newport Beach, it can be so dangerous because of the rock jetty there. I listen to lifeguards - well in part because my older daughter is a lifeguard at Huntington State beach.

Hi Sharon - Rock jetties and big waves are nothing to mess around with. We have surfers "shoot the pier" here in Cocoa Beach but it is discouraged for safety reasons.

HI John - I would imagine so. In Huntington Beach which is very close there is a pier that the surfers surf around.
