SAVING FACE (and other body parts!)

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty Canada - Brokerage

Okay, it is officially Summer in my part of the world.

Fashion dictates that white shoes and white pants are now acceptable to to be worn.  (I still find myself cringing tho when I see men wearing these and white belts too - shoot me, I'm sexist I know!)

We still haven't had the proof that Summer has arrived by way of the weather but we're getting strong hints.  The sun actually shone here yesterday and I did spend the majority of the day outdoors.

Which brings me to my topic:  SUNSCREEN

Most people understand the need for this.

Most people know someone who has had skin cancer.

Most people will make sure their children are protected.

Most people DO NOT protect themselves or do not protect themselves adequately!

Do you know which SPF to use?

Do you know that SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor?

Years ago, the highest SPF you could find was 30 but now I see 60, 70 and even 100 SPF

Most Dermatologists will tell you that there is little difference between SPF 30 and SPF 60 or above.

The main problem is that people are not applying enough product nor are they applying it often enough to achieve the protection of the number listed on the label.

How much is enough?

We are advised to apply at least 2 TABLESPOONS for our body and at least 1/2 TEASPOON for our face.

We are to err on the generous side and are reminded to reapply at least every two hours.

"Remember that the sun can still penetrate bare skin even with Suncreen but clothing can offer that extra layer of protection.  A pair of jeans provides more than the equivalent of SPF 1000"  says Benjamin Barankin, medical director of the Toronto Dermatology Centre.

"Large frame sunglasses and wide brimmed hats are also great options.  Pair them with a stylish cotton caftan or a loose top and shots and you're good to go!"

And of course, Gananoque, the Gateway to the world famous 1000 Islands, is the place to be in the summertime - any time!!   Come for a visit, and stay for a lifetime, but while you're here, give Susan Emo a call and allow her the privilege of introducing you to her town!

Stay safe in the sun and stay safe on the roads, river and lakes this summer -

Don't drink and drive !!

It is all because of the sunscreen that I've worn all my life that I look like your "sistah"  LOL

(well except for a few teenage years when I fought it!)

I'm a 50 and a 1/2 year old lady but I don't believe in wrinkles !!  That's another reason I use sunscreen!!!!!!!

Hi Susan - 100 SPF is so yesterday.  When I was at Walmart a couple of days ago, the brand I buy now offers 110 SPF.  I bought the 45 SPF.

At the rates of application you indicated in your post, it would seem that we would need to use a whole bottle everyday.

I worked in the garden Saturday without sunscreen, my shoulders and arms are burnt.  If the damage happens in our teens, then I'm probably screwed, I sure hope not.  A broker here in town just lost his wife to skin cancer a couple of months ago, after several years of fighting it.

I used to think skin cancer wasn't a big deal, it's just your skin, but it will kill you - our skin is our largest organ.

Tracie -  You're right it can kill you!  Skin Cancer can be deadly and that message should be on every door of every tanning salon too.

I like it!  Good info and nice gentle reminder!  Years of playing in the sun have taken their toll on my scalp.  I just never wanted to wear a hat.  I probably should have!

Hi Barbara-Jo -  What I didn't mention is that we should be protecting ourselves EVERY day, winter included.   And, our pets need to be protected too.

Susan ~ thanks for a timely reminder.  I was surprised to learn that we need sunscreen every single day, not just when you're sitting out in the sun.  I've found that using a moisturizer with a high SPF in it is the best way for me to remember about applying it to my face.

Maureen -  protect that Irish skin!!!   Moisturizer with a high SPF is a wonderful way to protect yourself.  Incedential sun exposure is just as bad as sunbathing!

Since I am a swimmer, I REALLY know what sunscreen is and all the variables of SPF, etc.  However, there is one thing I often see happen at the pool that concerns me.  Parents come in with small children.  They strip the kids down to their swimsuits, and haul out the spray sunscreen.  I worry about kids inhaling that stuff while it is being sprayed on.  I wonder if rubbing on a lotion might be better.  Or at the very least have the kid hold their breath while being sprayed.
