The Sky is Falling, The Sky is Falling!

The Sky is Falling, The Sky is Falling!

Home Staging Vancouver-Before & After PhotosI felt like quoting our favourite fowl, Chicken Little, when I laid eyes on this Master Bedroom.  My company, Exit Stage Right, had been hired by the owners to stage this home for sale, and I was just getting a preliminary tour.  The style of the home was west coast contemporary, pretty normal for around this area.  Everything seemed pretty run-of-the mill.  Not too many surprises.  But then we entered the Master Bedroom...

Normally, when you enter a bedroom, the focal point should be the bed, but in this case, my eye skipped over the bed and headed straight for the ceiling.  Oh my.  The ceiling had been painted blue.  Not fluffy cloud white with a hint of blue, not robin's egg blue, but a vibrant, dark, electric blue.  Wow!  Not that there's really anything wrong with that.  If you want to live in a room that has pink, purple, acid green ceilings, knock yourself out.  However, when putting your home on the market, you need to be sure that personal decor is toned down or eliminated, if it's too distracting.

In this case, not only was the blue Home Staging North Vancouver - Before & After Photoson the ceiling dominant, but light colours recede, and dark colours descend.  I felt as if I was being squashed down by this heavy, blue coloured ceiling.  Not to worry.  The problem was very easily solved by suggesting the home owners hire a painter to paint out the ceiling white.  The difference was night and day.  Once the ceiling had been repainted, the whole feeling of the room lightened up and felt larger.  The home owners were great and very motivated to follow any suggestions I had.  Their home sold very quickly, and they have now moved on.

Hi Sally - What a difference - can we say night and day?  That blue ceiling was certainly night....  Your staged room is scrumptious.

Gay - Thanks, and you said it "night and day" for sure!

Janet - Those blue ceilings with stars on them are often in childrens bedroom, not the Master!  Actually, the homeowner loves the outdoors, and wanted to create an outdoor sky effect, which is fine when living, but not when selling.

Cheryl - You nailed it!

David - Oh, there you go, bandying about those French terms.  The Matisse in me desperately wanted to paint in vines, leaves and birds, but the practical Stager in me said "No - grab a paint roller, stat!".

Julie - Awww, thanks!  It's wonderful to have motivated sellers, prepared to do whatever it takes.

Judy - Oh, ok, I'll let you say "night and day"...  thanks, this was a very satisfying stage.

Yikes................that's all I've got for the blue ceiling, but I must say I love what you did with the room.  I also love your little "banter" with Mr. Ames.............you two kill me!

Nice transformation, Sally!  I'm not at all surprised to hear that this home sold quickly.  That dark blue ceiling was a real "gloomy" aspect to the room before you swooped down with your magic wand.

Roger - Yikes pretty much says it all...  You and David both crack me up.  My day isn't complete until you've both made me laugh, and I haven't been disappointed yet!

Maureen - That's it - that's the adjective I was looking for:  "gloomy".  Yes, the end result was lighter and brighter, much to the relief of all concerned.

Sally, what a wonderful transformation. I just love your take on Chicken Little's famous expression. It made me imagine buyers running around the rooms shouting; "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

And that would have happened if you hadn't come in and worked your magic.

A fine job!

Sally, I was surprised that owners didn't have matching blue stripe comforter... hold on they did have those stripes on the bench cushion and this plastic bin color was carefully selected to match LOL.

You did wonderful job. It fells like I want to stay, take my shoes off and walk on that fluffy rug, and those table lamps are dream to have.

Donna - Why thank you, Donna!  Good thing I didn't use the expression "chickens running around with their heads cut off"!!!  I'm just so glad they didn't hesitate to have the ceiling (and a few other rooms) painted.

Anna - Ok, they did seem quite partial to blue...  Interestingly, the owners purchased the lamps I brought in, to take to their new home (along with some other accessories).

Roger - Sad, isn't it?  I actually visualized myself sitting on your cottage porch today.  Sigh.  Well, I'm convinced we'll meet in 3D one day.

Barbara - Often homeowners are reluctant to paint, because they are selling.  However, their return on investment is huge and in this case, painting the ceiling white really paid off.

Sally....I'm late to the party but wanted to leave a few words!!  I would feel like I had to duck down entering the "before" bedroom....wonderful transformation!  And I love your choice of bedding and art work....just used that same piece in a family room with green or orange:

Next time I'll follow your lead and use it in a bedroom!!!

Kathy - Hey, welcome to the party!  I absolutely love that piece of art.  It's so versatile, I think it would look good pretty much anywhere.  I also love the soft tones.  That zip of orange you used in the cushions looks fab.  Great minds think alike!

Wendy - Better late than never!  Welcome to the party - this couple were very motivated to do whatever it took to get their place sold - dream clients, really, so they were on board re painting the ceiling.  It did make a huge difference.
