Wood Pecker Woes

Wood Pecker Woes...

What's a girl to do?  The first time I heard this noisy, destructive bird I thought someone was out doors hitting their shoes together to get the mud off the bottoms.  Finally, I looked out the window and saw this huge red headed woodpecker.  The bird was about the size of a large Crow.  The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America.

The woodpecker was pretty cool to see up close but it's making a mess out of the wooden handrail on our deck.  The quality of the pictures I've taken aren't great. I couldn't get closer without scaring the bird away.

Does anyone know what to do to keep the woodpecker from returning to do more damage?

Richard...I'm thinking that what's on my mind is illegal. Would you be thinking in that same direction?

I think you are both thinking the same as me. LOL Maybe hang out a wind chime and the noise would scare him off but then again that might drive you crazy.

My partner says a 12 gauge shotgun will do the trick. Ouch!

Billi...I had the same thoughts. Seth shoots trees and other objects in the yard with a BB gun and I could turn him loose on Red but I think it's illegal.  I think Dennis (above you) might have a good idea and no Dennis that wouldn't drive me crazy. I love wind chimes!

KIm- we have woodpeckers here in NC too, but none that large. And so far they've just been pecking on my trees.  Try "wiki ing" woodpecker removal. Wikiopedia has all the answers!

Kim- cool shot you got of the little pecker.  Now you really have to take "a shot" at the pecker!

From what I've heard, they don't go away!

Thanks Barbara...gonna have to do something with Woody.

Linda...hadn't thought to try that but I will! Thanks!

Cindy...Wish I could have gotten a clearer shot but that was the best I could do. I should've filmed him, he's really loud and he pecks big chunks of wood. It's unbelievable.

Kim,

We have woodpeckers here in Georgia also. However, they are not that size. I had one pecking on my house. The sales associate at Lowes suggested I put a piece of sheet metal where the bird was pecking. It worked. I was thinking of Woody Woodpecker with a scrunched up beak from hitting the metal. LOL

Susan...I'll have to tell Hubby about that one. Yes, I would think that might stop Old Woody from pecking away!

Kim,

I was thinking last night, I don't think it was sheet metal, I think is was some type of aluminum.  It was a few years ago, and all I remember is the woodpecker went away, after a few hits on the metal.
