I don't know if I grew up on an unusual farm or if it was the norm for this area. As a child, I thought it was the norm. But we never owned a Longhorn. Our cattle ranged from Brahamas, Herefords, to ??? but never a Longhorn. In fact I don't remember seeing many Longhorns as a child. Now it seems there are quite a few around. The Longhorn was fashioned here in America and is truly adapted to North America. The Longhorn began to be preserved in 1927 by the United States Government on wildlife preserves as the breed had started to disappear with the closed ranges in the early 1900s.
These are hardy cattle and well adapted to the area. They are considered excellent beef cattle and easy handling cattle as well as being a good all around breed. But mainly they are a trademark of TEXAS. Be sure to note them as you drive through this area as many of the cattle ranchers now own Longhorns. As with many things Texas, they are unique and hardy.
