Why do people wait until the last minute? A minor rant.

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

I know this is kind of a rhetorical question, but why do people wait until the last minute?  if people planned a bit better, we could help them a lot more.

Lately, we've had so many customers that want their job done yesteday.  I have people that ask me if we can install their carpeting tomorrow or the next day.  Don't they realize that these products need to be ORDERED?  Think about how many carpet options there are...and how many colors each option has.  Do you really think i stock all those options?

Yes, I suppose that we could stock a few basic options, but we focus on letting our customers CHOOSE what they want.

Also, it's a busy time for us, so even if we had all the materials on hand, we can't just turn on a time.  Good work requires a bit of patience and dime.

When it comes to installing hardwood, many people don't realize I can't speed the process along (unless we went to throw quality out the door.  First, hardwood needs to be delivered...sometines I can get it there in 1-2 days; other times (pending on the item), it can take 2-3 weeks.  Then, the wood needs to acclimate (get used to your temperature/humidy).  I can't speed up that time.  From there we install (and my guys are pretty quick). But, if this is a refinishing job, we need to allow for proper drying time between coats.  If we don't, it will bubble and it won't dry correctly...which means it won't look right and it won't last very long.

westchester NY carpetI just had to turn away another customer because there's no way I can drive up there to measure, order the carpet and have it installed by Saturday.  I don't like saying I can do something, when we might not be able to deliver.  A couple of weeks ago, I met w/ a customer who needed carpet installed within 2 days.  Originally, we had an appointment set up 4 weeks before and he cancelled.  Then, it was last minute and now an emergency before their movers were moving their stuff in.  I gladly recommended them to that annoying guy on TV. I told them I was sorry because they would pay more for this convenience of next day service. and it will prob. be lower quality  The wife then said, "Oh yeah, they have a 60% sale now."  I almost choked and then started to laugh.  Yeah, right, who really gives 60% off?  How could anyone afford it? (esp in this economy).  So, if this were true does that really mean that they normally make 60% margin?  Get real.  And, of course, now, they would be offering at cost...which also makes a ton of sense.  NOT.  Oh, yeah, and how do they fund those commercials?

Anyway, plan ahead...that way, you can use whomever you want and not be stuck with whoever is available because they can't find work or whoever has the gimmick that makes you think you're getting a good deal.

Just my thoughts for the day

Debbie, you mean you and your products aren't just dangling from the ceiling waiting for a phone call? lol As others have said, this is a common occurrence for some of us. It's just astounding...

I do custom picture framing as a side business and I have your full respect about needing time to measure, design the job and order the materials.  We can only do what we can do.

A product of the fast food society.  They want it NOW . . . and I didn't know that the flooring has to acclimate.  Makes sense but why rush a beautiful floor (Why rush a beautiful floor -- that's a good tagline.  You may have it!!)

I think it's a social influence that's prevalent in all aspects of our life. We want instant gratification in everything.

Debbie--why not look at it this way--no everyone should be a client.  I don't want to do business with people who can't plan, aren't realistic and think the entire world revolves around their every whim.  They will never end up being a good client or making referrals--they will always be dissatisfied.  So, now they will get exactly what they want--their carpeting installed in 24 hours and it has to be replaced in 4-5 years.

Tell me about it....just met a couple at an open house I was doing this weekend.  They wanted to know if I could help them find a house.  SURE! No Problem.  Then after some conversation, I find out that they are renting and their lease is up on June 15th!! Seriously!! You wait till 3 weeks before you have to move to look for a house! OMG! If they were paying cash, we could probably pull it off.  But they weren't and hadn't even been pre-approved by a lender yet!! Mind boggling!!

Hi Debbie,  Right on point.  I'll never understand why people spend time here and come into my ofice the day before they leave.  Some ask to be taken on a tour to see houses !

We live in a time of instant gratification. I guess these people don't care about quality or that sometimes it take time for something to be done right.

Debbie- good post.  I think a lot of people aren't familiar with the process involved in purchasing and installing new flooring.  If you only think "price" you may get it but what have you sacrificed!  Several years ago I was called to stage a vacant home late Tuesday.. and they needed it completed by Friday.  We did it but it was only with a great deal of help from our leasing company.

As consumers, we're spoiled. Consumers of goods, services, information, etc have access to instant gratification more than ever before and assume that most of the answers to the world's greatest questions are just hanging out in the iPhone app store waiting to be downladed (instantly!).

Speaking as an occasional procrastinator, when I'm looking for a quick fix, what I'm actually interested in is:

1. The rush of getting something new.

2. The relief of completing a to-do item.

I want the excitement of tangible ownership and the peace-of-mind that comes with knowing something is taken care of. Nine times out of ten, if you can find a way to leave me both enthusiastic and reassured, I'm happy to wait.

Obviously, some people have unrealistic expectations, and there will be no pleasing them. Other times, there are extentuating circumstances, like a move-in date, etc, but speaking from a customer's perspective, oftentimes recognizing and filling those emotional needs can calm down an antsy client and buy you some time. Afterall, we're impatient, not delusional. We know that sometimes you've just got to buckle down and wait your turn :)

Richie - Wow, thanks for the kind words.  I really appreciate that.  Yes, if you plan ahead, you can use whoever you want.  It's usually more iimportant to get the job doen well than fast.  We try to do both, but we can't control how quikcly the material s arrive and we do need a bit of notice vs. doing the job tomorrow.

Neil & Carol - OMG that is insane.  They're prob. used to renting and don't realize it takes more time to find a home and then all the steps after.  maybe they can extend their current lease.

Bill - I know, it's crazy.

Stephanie - Exactly!

Kathy - I know, that is so true. I'm going to do a post on how long it takes, real soon.

Jacqueline - Yes, I understand that...and I understand the move in date.  One of these customers is a previuous customer, so she should know from before...and she intends to use us for her next project.  this was a teensy job anyway and a great distance so it's not a loss.  The other customer was just unreasonable and planned super poorly and it was avoidabble.  For the original appt, he was rude and said he could only meet 1 day at one time and caused us to shift and rearrange another appt so we could meet w/ him...and then canceled.  Then, he didn't bother to call back until 4 weeks later and wanted it done the next day..

We try to be flexible and do the best we can.  We suggest products that might arrive sooner or dry faster, but therei's only so much we can do.

Eep! Like I said, there's just no pleasing some people, and customers like that are simply not worth the headache! Sounds like you are providing excellent service, and those who are willing to plan ahead are lucky to have you. I just know that I've been guilty of 11th hour desparation. I honed my procrastination to an art during university :)

Jacqueline - yes, some people just can't be pleased no matter what and some leave to the last mnute and sometimes it's more their loss than mine.  ironically, my past customer called that annoying guy on TV and said it would take c couple of weeks and their price was very high.  Her husband said to call Debbie back and tthey'll wait and they know I can take care of them and give them a goo price.

Patricia - Excellent pts.  It cuts both ways.  They wait and then we have to rush.
