Are the 30 Under 30 Really the Face of NAR? ~ Day Twenty Three of the 31 Days of May Challenge

Just who is the face of NAR? It's not that I have an issue with people under 30 - I don't! Snappy dressers don't offend me either. It is hard to put my finger on just why the annual "30 under 30" issue always irritates me.
30 Under 30 | www.MoonDancerRealty.com
While I do envy people who grew up in the age of tech and are able to embrace all aspects of e-social networking, the folks who really impress me are the ones who've mastered those skills without the benefit of those same opportunities.

Wouldn't it be far more interesting if in addition to the 30 Under 30 issue, REALTOR would also feature 20 over 20, 50 under 50, 60 over 60?  I've heard that there are even some vibrant 70+ year old agents.
Congratulations to the 30, but also - congratulations to the majority of Realtors who are over 30 and managing to go with the flow during these challenging times.

Mona I have to admit that I feel the same way. There is just something about that picture that makes me want to smack them. =)

I think, for me, the real thing is that they are being recognized for a short body of work. I'd like to see where they are when they are 40.

Hi Eric,  oh...make no mistake, I got fired up! LOL, so did a lot of the AR readers.  It's not that I'm not interested in the under 30 crowd...I was one and still think like one...that's not the case at all.  I just want to read about ALL ages.  Plus, my rant teeters on a whole media/socio deal.  I really do appreciate your comment and respect it.

Hello J. Phillip ( I like people who use an initial instead of a first name),  it's a smack-worthy photo because it is a ridiculous pose.  When they are 40, they will be like all age groups. Some will have succeeded, some will fizzle out like bad firecrackers and they rest will be slugging it out day by day like the majority of people.  Good to hear from you.

I always admire the 30 under 30  :) I am actually going to submit my entry for next years if my sales volume is there.. After reading Jon's blog I know I have an advantage over this years group.. I recognize the importance of internet marketing and blogging.. I am completely addicted to AR and one of my biggest goals since I became a realtor is to be one of the 30 under 30 agents.. We will see if I stand out enough to make it on the list.. Maybe my unorthodox personality will get me there.

Hi Mona, I guess those under 30 have chosen real estate as their first career whereas many of us who make up the "average" age group of REALTORS are in their second or third careers!

Good Morning Stacey, I visited your site before offering a comment back to you.  Thanks for the pink flamingo post - I went to grade school in Chula Vista and remember the San Diego Zoo well.

I noticed you are an AR Ambassador and that does speak volumes about you over the other candidates.  I wish you well.

For the sake of other women in all professions, please don't let them put you in spike heels in a dumb position.  It trivializes all that you HAVE accomplished and distracts the reader from considering your extreme potential for future accomplishments.

Hello Sylvia, we are the sum of all of our parts and the REALTOR who has the cache of experience from previous "lives" will find it easier to connect personally in a business that will always be about people.

Mona:  I just picked up this issue at the office the other day & thru it immediately into the backseat of the car! It aggravated me also but I wasn't sure why. Stillettos on a ladder? Yeah, realistic alright.

How about a mold mask from showing a soggy basement in a foreclosure?  That's more realistic!

Let's start a campaign about 50 at 50, etc?  Let me know. ;-)

Well, at least they could do a campaign 45 under 45! Then a "late summer chicken" like me would still have a chance!!!

I do like Tammy's attitude. I've never been a big person about this topic though. It seemed challenging enough to try and establish myself in a small town where everyone seems to carry geneology clout. The "under 30" club made it even more exclusive, so I tend to be anti-social and reclusive--- cuz it feels so awful. I truly think the club is so lame and reminds me of high-school...no, make that grade school.

Mona:

Here in San Diego, Ca one of the "30 Under 30" is located in El Cajon, and was feature in the San Diego Union, and it tauted his aggressive nature with taking on a challenging market, starting a business with a new baby --mortgaging his home to the hilt, which was back when the market was starting to change. He now has 200 agents --- I don't begrudge anyone there 15 minutes of fame, but this person is not the first to take on this kind of risk, and succeed in real estate, nor will he be the last. The NAR article-- makes it sound like those under 30 need to be commended for choosing real estate --- I for one want to celebrate each and every ones success in real estate  be they are just starting out in real estate to those that have many years under our belts.

Hi Lyn, I can visualize the cover now with the mold masks and those are people (no matter what age) I would take seriously!

Hello Gina - Wouldn't it be nice if we thought NAR was reading these posts?

You know, Mara - I hadn't thought about it in terms of "cliques" but you are right. I'll bet you aren't anti-social and reclusive though - just dance to the beat of a different drummer. We also live in a small town without the benefit of genealogy clout (I DO need to go read your blogs-love the wordsmithing).

Absolutely Lorraine or Loretta! Celebrate individual success stories regardless of age.

Wow, I can feel the animosity ;-P.

The funny thing is, I am not in love with the 30 under 30 issue either for a variety of reasons, but for some reason I feel the need to defend it here - mostly because of the comments generated on this post I guess.

First of all, I'm 31 and my husband is 32, so we are no longer eligible for that club (and never applied for it or whatever you have to do to become one of them), but we;ve been in real estate since I was 24.  This was during a good economy and right before the "big" boom and then after and so while I haven't weathered 30 years of ups and down markets, I think we've done a pretty good job with this one.  Many people in your comments have stated or insinuated that young folk having been around long enough to prove they can make it.  But, I've actually been in real estate for 7 years.  That's not forever, but it's a lot longer than some people no matter what your age and I can tell you that there are only a handful of people from my real estate class that are still in the business (and they were all ages).  And some of these 30 under 30's started even younger than 24, so potentially have been in the business already for a decade.  That's not chump change.

Also, my generation and the younger generation seem to be a lot less hard workers (I'm very sorry to say) and entrepreneurial than generations past and so I think it's great that there are actually "kids" out there willing to work their butts off and make a difference and why not get acknowledged for it?

I'm not really offended by this post or the comments, just thought I'd throw my opinion in the mix.

P.S.  I think the photo is goofy too, but I get they were going for the "climbing the ladder" analogy.

P.P.S.  One time my husband walked around a farm, climbing through weeds and mud with a listing agent for the property who showed up in heels.  She went along like she didn't even notice she was wearing heals.  My husband thought it was awesome.  But she was in her 50's, not her 30's ;-)

Climbing a ladder in heels is one thing - but how about trying to climb in those dresses! But I do like the purples.

Good morning Kasey, thanks for the comments, the p.s. and the p.p.s.  I'm glad you weren't offended by the post or the comments - non were intended.  In fact, anyone who would take offense needs to mature a little and re-read with more objectivity.

This has been a great conversation to have. Not once have I interpreted any comment to be negative towards the "award" winners. Not at all. This is about NAR and what they choose to focus on.  It's about advertisers and the role models they want to shove down our throats. The "climbing the ladder" analogy? Cheesy! If they want to use the ladders, fine - just outfit the agents in more realistic garb - something that the rest of us will buy into!

Congratulations to you for being committed enough to weather all real estate storms and to have exceeded your classmates' longevity. Judging from the thoughtfulness of your comment, you'll be around for the 50 after 50 club!!! I look forward to reading your blogs and hearing about you. Thanks again.

Hi Marte, I'm a sucker for purples too! I gave up heels when I discovered they were crap for the health of my feet and the realization that I couldn't run from danger because of my shoe choice.  I was nineteen years old!  I coulda been a contender for the 20 under 20!

I think they are discriminating.  How about 50 over 50 and talk about how older people are bringing skills and experience from other fields into real estate.

Hey Kasey, it's possible to be bubbling over with thoughts and have your brain work faster than your typing! Besides, you were commenting at 11:30 at night.  I still really appreciate you chiming in.

Hello Gene, I'd love to see NAR focus on what we learn from each other!  I know I've learned things from the 30 under 30 and it would be good to know if they learned anything from us.  That would be interesting and inclusive.

Mona, As you and I have talked about, the objection to this article is on several levels.  It is not just about the fact that these folks are young when the majority of realtors are not.  It's great to feature and encourage the young so that the future of real-estate survives, but to act like they are all that matters IS discrimination.  Good for them on all their success, now what about the rest of us.  The second main point though is the steroetypes that are presented not only in the cover shot but throughout that entire issue. You must be young, you must be thin, you must dress as though you were going down a run-way.  What has any of that to do with real estate?  In fact the only two women in the entire issue that looked like real people were the two head shots in the volunteer winners article.  Now doesn't that just figure.  The point is NAR, pay attention to who your membership is and what they do and what they stand for.  Use us or lose us.

I was fortunate enough to be picked for this year's "30 under 30". With the median age of a Realtor being 52, success before the age of 30 is defying the odds. I don't think we are "the face of NAR" but rather being recognized for our success before 30 which is far from normal. I have personally always looked forward to this issue as it has been a career goal of mine to be selected.

Lorraine/Lorretta Katz, The UT article stated nothing about mortgaging my home to start the business nor did it say I was the only one to ever do so. It just simply said that I put every dollar I had at the time to grow my business. There was no turning back for me. I have learned alot during this experience. Most importantly, some people just cant be happy for you.

Hello Scott (I had to be resourceful to get your name, since it doesn't appear beneath your photo!)  Congratulations on your success and may you grow to be a very old man with the same or better level of success.  May you also continue to extend your hand out to good agents of all ages to increase both yours and their success.

I can't speak for all of the agents making comments here, but I think I speak for the majority - the issue is not now, has never been and will never be that you don't deserve to have your success celebrated...you do.

The issue (in my extremely humble and 55 year old opinion) is...don't we all deserve to share the spotlight.

I'm totally happy that you chose to comment on this post and in return, I'd like to invite everyone visiting my blog to also read yours. Scott's Blog about 30 Under 30.
